NSW Premier Chris Minns has warned those involved in the latest "neo-Nazi demonstration" will be exposed after a group of men gathered in a North Sydney park, sparking another police operation.
Key points:
- A group of about 20 men clad in black gathered at Artarmon Reserve
- It's the third day in a row that a similar gathering has taken place in Sydney
- The premier says the police have the right to unmask Nazis
A group of at least 20 masked men wearing black clothing congregated at Artarmon Reserve at about 9am on Sunday.
NSW Police conducted an operation into the gathering, which was "contained" and not a "threat to public safety".
The operation concluded after the group disbanded at 10:30am.
The premier condemned the group over their behaviour and said any individual involved could be unmasked to the public as a "massive racist".
"There's obviously a neo-Nazi demonstration in Artarmon this morning," he said.
"No one wants this. They're importing hate into New South Wales.
"And I just want to make this point clear if hasn't been made clear before, in New South Wales the police have the right to unmask Nazis on our streets.
"You'll be exposed as a racist to your family, your friends, your employers and your work mates for the first time."
Mr Minns described the group's behaviour as "absurd" and "pathetic".
He reiterated his inclination to change the state's anti-vilification laws, including outlawing the Nazi salute.
"We are looking at the laws and examining them to make sure that overt Nazi gestures and symbols are outlawed in New South Wales, and we'll make sure that the people of New South Wales are safe and we protect the tenants of our multicultural, harmonious community."
Several members of the group have been issued a Public Safety Order, prohibiting them from entering a number of local government areas across Sydney until midnight on Sunday.
Previous action thwarted
It's the third day in a row that a group of masked men wearing all black have assembled together in Sydney.
On Australia Day, police intercepted a group of about 61 men on a train at North Sydney Station.
A large police presence, including officers from the riot squad, had cleared the station and waited for the group to arrive.
Six people were initially arrested. Two of them were later released and issued with infringement notices for offensive behaviour.
Police issued 57 infringement notices in total to the members of the group. No charges were laid.
On Saturday evening, police thwarted another gathering in North Turramurra just hours after the premier first addressed it.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also condemned the group, saying he was "horrified" by what he saw.
"I don't want to see people in balaclavas dressed in black from head to toe who are engaged in neo--Nazi activity in this country," he said on Saturday.
"It has no place, and it is rightly being condemned by all decent people."
Mr Albanese said the group's actions were contradictory to what January 26 was supposed to celebrate.
