A tropical low in the Coral Sea is expected to turn into a cyclone later today or tomorrow morning.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the slow-moving weather system is now considered likely to cross the coast next week between Cooktown and Mackay.
A severe impact is possible, especially if the cyclone makes landfall south of Cairns, according to the BOM forecast.
BOM senior forecaster Steve Hadley said on Saturday afternoon that the longer it develops offshore, the more intense the storm could be, and the further south it could cross.
"If it continues to struggle with its development it could move along to the coast a bit sooner, potentially as early as Tuesday," he said.
"The real concerning situation is if it does take a little longer to start moving across the coast, it'll be in an area where it could develop longer and become a more powerful tropical cyclone, and also move further south."
Livingstone's Mayor Andrew Ireland said the region, which includes the coastal town of Yeppoon, was getting prepared but there was "no need to panic" just yet.
"We're making sure the disaster management centre in Yeppoon is operational and ready to go should it need to be. We're checking the availability of evacuation centres, making sure they're operational," he said.
"We'll keep on top of it from the local disaster management point of view within council, and obviously, if situations arise or if we need to step up our preparedness and alerts, we will contact the community straight away."
