Dallas Hayden — the wife of former governor-general and one-time Labor Party leader Bill Hayden — has died, just months after the death of her husband.
Mrs Hayden was 87 and died peacefully at home in Queensland, surrounded by family.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said she was "a person of wonderful warmth".
"She spent many years playing supporting roles in public life and her optimism, her quiet courage and her strength of character were a powerful source of inspiration for her adoring husband, Bill," Mr Albanese said in a statement.
"On behalf of the Australian government and the Australian Labor Party, I offer our heartfelt condolences to Dallas Hayden's family and friends."
Her death comes less than three months after the death of her husband, who served as federal opposition leader and was in 1989 appointed governor-general.
Mrs Hayden's family paid tribute to her as someone who "had a unique love and affinity with people", and said the relationships she was able to foster "paved and opened doors to allow Dad to succeed in public life".
"Dad spoke often of his love for Dallas and the invaluable love and support she provided as an equal in their relationship, which allowed him to achieve and provide over 40 years of devoted public service," her family said in a statement.
"He always said he could not have achieved any of it without her.
"For Mum, the loss of Dad was intolerable and she was heartbroken and devastated at the loss of Dad in October last year."
Mrs Hayden was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2020 for her significant service to the Australian community.
Governor-General David Hurley said she worked "tirelessly" supporting community groups and worked hard as patron of several charitable organisations.
"Visitors to and staff at Government House recall her warmth and genuine interest in others, her passion and commitment to service," he said.
"Linda and I were grateful for the opportunity to spend time with her at her husband of more than 60 years' funeral. Theirs was a tremendous partnership and Australia was richer for her service."
Mr and Mrs Hayden are survived by their children Georgina, Ingrid and Kirk.
