Detectives have launched a fresh appeal for information about the descretion and theft from Meshilin Marrogi's grave.(Vimeo)

Police will open an information caravan in Melbourne's north as they continue to search for two men who broke into a mausoleum and stole a diamond ring from the corpse of an underworld figure's sister.

Detectives investigating the desecration of Meshilin Marrogi's grave have released new information about a vehicle believed to have been used by the offenders during the gruesome burglary and theft at Preston General Cemetery in Bundoora on July 30, 2023.

A dark coloured Mini Cooper was reportedly seen in the area around 3:30am and 5am on the morning of the burglary.

Police have also re-released images of the men they are looking to identify and repeated the belief that the theft of the expensive ring was not the only motive for the crime.

Ms Marrogi was the sister of convicted murderer and drug importer George Marrogi, and died in 2021 aged 30 after contracting COVID-19.

During an appeal for information in December, Detective Inspector Graham Banks from the Lunar Taskforce said police believed the crime was clearly intended to cause friction and hurt to Mr Marrogi.

Inspector Banks said the men pictured in CCTV at Preston cemetery wearing gas masks, hooded jumpers and dark clothing were believed to be linked to one of the primary syndicates involved in a series of arson attacks on tobacco shops across Melbourne.

He said the two cemetery thieves were acting on behalf of a high-level criminal based overseas, who was directing crime in Australia, and that the crime marked a new low in the war between the syndicates.

The information caravan will be situated at the Preston Cemetery on Plenty Road, Bundoora between 9:30am and 2.30pm on Monday.

Police said they encouraged anyone who may have information about the incident to speak to officers at the caravan.
