The storms are part of the extremely hot conditions sweeping across eastern and southeastern Australia.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jonathan How told Today this morning scorching conditions in central Australia will begin sweeping eastwards.
"The heatwave will affect parts of South Australia, western New South Wales and Victoria. Also getting quite warm across Tasmania," he said.
"We've seen plenty of thunderstorms across NSW and Queensland yesterday. That thunderstorm threat does remain today. Mainly areas north of Sydney."
The bureau has warned storms are moving eastward from the Blue Mountains in New South Wales towards the areas of Hawkesbury, Parramatta, Erskine Park and Liverpool.
Earlier this week Sydney was lashed by storms and they are forecast to return on Sunday and into Monday.
The State Emergency Service has warned communities in affected areas to expect damaging winds and hailstones.
It advised residents to take safeguards including "staying away from windows", moving their vehicles to covered areas, disconnecting computers and appliances and stop using phone lines.
A young boy is recovering in hospital after he was struck by lightning on a beach south of Sydney yesterday. He was swimming at Warrilla Beach near Shellharbour when he was struck and left with burns on his chest.
The hot conditions will impact South Australia first, with Adelaide forecast to swelter in a top of 37C today, before Victoria (35C) and NSW (31C) cop the heat tomorrow.
