Melbourne man charged after cyclist killed in alleged hit-and-run - 9News

A man has been charged after a cyclist was killed in an alleged hit-and-run in Melbourne's south-east.

Passersby found the cyclist's body on the side of the road in Bangholme, between Dandenong and Frankston, about 6am today.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detective Sergeant Richard Wood said a 37-year-old Cranbourne East man made himself known to police when they arrived at his home earlier today.

He said they were following up on a triple zero call from the address.

Police allege he fled after hitting the cyclist with a "Winnebago-type vehicle" on Frankston-Dandenong Road, north of Thompsons Road.

Later in the evening, police charged the 37-year-old with numerous offences including dangerous driving causing death and failing to render assistance.

He was bailed to face court in May.

Wood said someone called triple zero from the man's Cranbourne East home at roughly the same time a passing driver found the body on the road this morning and called emergency services.

It was still unclear what time the motorhome and bike collided.

Wood said it was unclear what level of protective clothing the cyclist was wearing or where he was riding to.

"I think it's important that people drive to the conditions," he warned drivers.

"If it's dark, extra care and attention needs to be paid.

"And again, if you are involved in a collision, you need to stop, get out, render assistance."
