Victoria floods LIVE updates: Man dies in Rochester as flooding evacuation orders issued for Orrvale, Mooroopna, Shepparton - The Age

When Victorian Racing Club first planned to erect its flood wall around the Flemington racecourse, local man Shane Trewin was among the residents who opposed the wall.

The VRC won the right to build the wall and three years ago Trewin died.

Channel Nine reports that on Friday, floodwaters hit Trewin’s home and his two sons Tyson and Kinnon came home from Queensland to help with the cleanup.

They are among a number of Maribyrnong locals who question whether the flood would have caused as much damage if water hadn’t been diverted at the wall.

The VRC said it was entitled to protect the racecourse and iits major events like the Melbourne Cup are major economic drivers for Victoria.

“Unfortunately, he’s not here at the moment,” Kinnon Trewin told Channel Nine when asked about his father.

“He passed away three years ago, and I’d hate for him to see it, to be honest.”

Electricity suppliers Powercor and CitiPower say they may be forced to turn off substations in Charlton and Mooroopna due to flooding.

“If significant flood water does reach either of the substations this may pose a major safety risk, so we may need to de-energise them to protect the community and reduce the risk of long-term damage to infrastructure,” a spokeswoman said.

“If we do need to take this action, customers may be without power for a prolonged period as we will only be able to re-energise the site when water has receded and it is safe to do so.

“We are asking customers to plan ahead and know what they would do if power did go out.”

Charlton zone substation supplies power Birchip, Charlton, Boort, Wycheproof, Watchem, Wedderburn, Korong Vale, Quambatook, Berriwillock, Culgoa, Sea Lake, St Arnaud, Donald and surrounding towns.

Mooroopna zone substation supplies power to Tatura, Mooroopna, Ardmona, parts of Shepparton, Kialla, Haston, Murchison, Dhurringile, Rushworth and surrounding towns.

Residents in Maribyrnong have begun the arduous task of cleaning out their homes following yesterday’s floods.

Piles of damaged household goods, furniture and clothes pile up on the verges along Oakland Street. The roads and footpaths are covered in a carpet of mud and residents are using brooms and rakes to sweep it away from their driveways and gardens.

Mother-of-five Lam Luong was putting her family’s soiled personal belongings in plastic bags as her father-in-law carted cardboard boxes and waste in a wheelbarrow.

Neighbours came to lend a hand emptying the house, which had been completely inundated.

“Cheap stuff, expensive stuff, it’s all the same,” Luong said. “It’s all the same colour. I hate brown from now on.”

Strawberry Fields, described as “four days of live music, large-scale art, workshops and wild river swimming” is held annually on the Murray River in Tocumwal, a town on the Victoria-NSW border.

The bush bash was scheduled for October 28 to 30 –but after watching flood levels on the Murray River rise well into September, organisers made the call to cancel the event at the “11th hour”. It was a month out from the festival, and right before construction needed to start.

Going to a music festival has been a rite of passage for many Australians, but there’s no bass thumping loud enough to drown out warnings that the beloved sardine-packed sweaty mosh pit in the middle of a paddock is in trouble.

The waterlogged mess of this year’s Splendour in the Grass was just the start, with organisers, artists and attendees alike warning that wild weather has put Australia’s live music scene under serious threat. This year alone, more than eight music festivals have been cancelled or postponed due to bad weather.
