Key points:
- Police found a woman with severe injuries outside a home in Bronte
- The 74-year-old woman was taken to St Vincent's Hospital but died
- Steven Barker was charged with one count of murder
Steven Barker, 74, was refused bail and is due to appear at Waverley Court today.
Police were called to the home on Bronte Road, in Bronte about 6pm on Thursday after receiving a report concerning the woman's welfare.
They arrived to find the 74-year-old woman outside the home with critical injuries.
Police and paramedics helped the woman before she was taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where she died shortly after.
Mr Barker was arrested at the scene and taken to Waverley Police Station, where he was charged with one count of murder.
He had blood stains on his shirt and a bruise on his face.
Detectives left the home this morning with large brown paper bags.
They were seen searching a car at the property and looking through bins.
A neighbour who lives on the same street, David Bullock, walked past the scene this morning.
"We heard all the ambulances and sirens last night when we were getting ready to go to bed," he said.
Another neighbour Sarah Littman said she was in "pure shock".
"You don't expect to see this on your morning walk, it's just so sad. I'm a bit speechless to be honest," she said.
"You don't really think these things can happen, especially so close to home."
