Sydney news: Reprieve from rain for now but another dumping expected on Wednesday - ABC News

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Rain reprieve short, authorities say

The reprieve from the rain over the next few days will be short-lived as another big weather system is expected mid-week.

Multiple evacuation orders were issued yesterday across Sydney's Hawkesbury region and parts of the State's central west and Riverina regions.

Several evacuation centres were also set up for those needing a place to stay.

Emergency Services Minister Steph Cooke urged people not to be deceived by the brief bout of sunshine.

"We may be seeing some dry conditions at present but our rivers continue to rise and we know that there is another event coming through," Ms Cooke said.

The Australian Defence Force remains on stand-by to assist if needed.

The weather bureau's Jane Golding said the focus is now on the next system and its impact on rivers already at peak levels.

Labor 'constitutionally confused' over gig economy policy

The state government has questioned whether a NSW Labor government could overhaul workplace laws to better protect gig economy workers without change from the federal government.

Yesterday, Labor unveiled a key policy it plans to take to the March state election for people who are contracted for on-demand work like food delivery riders, rideshare drivers and sole traders in the disability and community services sector.

If it wins government it plans to set up a workers compensation scheme for gig workers, as well as a portable leave and entitlement scheme.

The government has long promised reform in the gig economy area, but Workplace Relations Minister Damien Tudehope has been critical of Labor's plan.

"The federal government has a responsibility for a lot of the measures that Labor are now recommending as part of state law and are quite frankly constitutionally confused," he said.

Police are appealing for help following the theft of more than 50 motorcycles in Sydney's inner west.

The Honda CRF 250 bikes were put in shipping containers and taken to a holding yard in Strathfield in July.

But three days late the bikes, each worth more than $5,000, were missing.

Police have released CCTV of a Holden Barina hatchback as part of their investigations.

Man, 28, charged over house fire

A man has been charged over a weekend house fire at east Maitland in the NSW Hunter Valley.

The home was badly damaged in the blaze on Sunday morning.

A 28-year-old man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor burns before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

After a search of the property, the bodies of two cats were found.

A 44-year-old man was later arrested at Millers Forest and charged over the blaze.

He remains behind bars and is due to appear in court today.
