Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has delivered a firm reminder to NRL fans attending the Grand Final about what’s expected.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has issued a stern reminder to NRL fans attending tonight’s Grand Final about what’s expected of them, as she revealed some promising news about the state’s Covid-19 outbreak.
In a press conference today, Ms Palaszczuk confirmed Queensland had recorded no new local cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours. This means the rugby league decider between Penrith and South Sydney will go ahead as planned at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in front of nearly 40,000 fans.

More than 50,000 supporters were initially expected to attend a sold out Grand Final but during the week the Covid outbreak meant capacity was slashed to 75 per cent.
Just two new local cases were recorded on both Friday and Saturday, leaving the NRL optimistic there would be no need to postpone of relocate the Grand Final — options which had been floated by Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) chairman Peter V’landys should the public health situation worsen.
Footy chiefs could breathe a sigh of relief on Sunday when Ms Palaszczuk confirmed the good news of zero cases.
The Premier will be at the game and she had a message for footy fans who will be watching on in the stands, reminding them to adhere to strict Covid-safe protocols — particularly when it comes to mask-wearing.
All spectators must check into the stadium via a QR code and keep their mask on unless eating or drinking. Ms Palaszczuk wanted people to know exactly what that means, saying simply holding a beer in your hand isn’t an excuse to remove a mask.
“As long as there are no issues that arise this afternoon it is my intention to attend (the Grand Final),” Ms Palaszczuk told reporters on Sunday morning.
“Can I say to people who are attending, you have to check into the stadium, you have to wear your mask in there and you can only remove your mask when you are seated if you are eating or drinking.
“That doesn’t mean sitting there with a beer and having the mask off — it’s only when you are drinking.
“We have to do this to keep everyone safe so I am making it very clear that these are the conditions that have been put on by Dr Young and that is what I expect everyone to do.”
Ms Palaszczuk said despite the promising news about case numbers, Queensland was “not out of the woods yet” and encouraged anyone showing symptoms to get tested.
