NSW verge of hitting 90 per cent first vaccine dose milestone as state records 646 cases, 11 deaths - ABC News

NSW is on the verge of reaching another COVID-19 vaccination target, with almost 90 per cent of people aged over 16 having received at least one jab.

Just days before fully inocculated people in the state's numerous lockdown areas are due to receive a swathe of freedoms, NSW Health revealed 89.4 per cent of over 16s had been protected against the virus.

The state recorded 646 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8:00pm yesterday and 11 people with the virus died.

One of the fatalities was a man in his 80s who was a resident of the Allity Beechwood Aged Care Facility in Revesby and is the fourth death link to the outbreak there.

Seven of the people who died were unvaccinated, three had received one dose and one had received two doses.

Five of the COVID-19 deaths were from south-west Sydney, three were from Western Sydney, one was from the city's south-east, one was from Sydney's inner city and another from the lower north shore.

They were all aged between their 50s and 80s.

There have been 414 COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since June 16 2021 and 470 in total since the start of the pandemic.

There are currently 856 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 170 people in intensive care, 75 of whom require ventilation.

Earlier this week, health authorities announced 70 per cent of people aged over 16 had been fully vaccinated.

It was a crucial target, as it means restrictions will be relaxed for those who have had both jabs from Monday.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet yesterday announced major changes to the state's roadmap out of lockdown.

While settings around hospitality and retail remain unchanged, Mr Perrottet departed from his predecessor's blueprint by increasing household visitors from five to 10.

He also raised the gap for gatherings in public spaces from 20 to 30 and increased the cap at weddings and funerals from 50 to 100.

While infections were always expected to increase as restrictions eased, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) said the amendments meant the state was moving "too fast, too soon".

AMA NSW president Dannielle McMullen was concerned hospitals would be overwhelmed after the state effectively doubled the risk vectors for transmissions in some settings.

"We've got a new Premier in the driver's seat, but that's not a good enough reason to deviate from the course previously set," she said.
