Dominic Perrottet has already made some changes after his first full day as NSW Premier as residents brace for more news after a late-night meeting.
Dominic Perrottet has already made some changes after his first full day as NSW Premier as residents brace for an update after a late-night meeting with key officials.
As Mr Perrottet stepped into a crisis cabinet meeting late on Wednesday, the premier had already flagged potential tweaks to the state’s road map out of lockdown.
At the same time, NSW became the first Australian jurisdiction to reach the 70 per cent vaccination milestone of its eligible population against Covid-19.
Despite the news, Mr Perrottet confirmed “Freedom Day” in NSW won’t come early and committed to next Monday, but there have already been some changes made to the plan.
As part of his “first act”, the premier is ditching the 11am Covid-19 presser, which experts say means Mr Perrottet does not want to be the “Covid numbers premier”.
“Gladys Berejiklian, part of the aura she created around herself was those 11am pressers,” Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said.
“That’s the end of that.”
But he signalled Mr Perrottet’s plan to “not make a song and dance of it every day”.
Mr Perrottet used his first day in the top job to discuss the state’s much anticipated recovery road map with NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard and chief health officer Kerry Chant, alongside new deputy premier Stuart Ayres.
The crisis meeting furthered the discussion on the road map, including high vaccination rates, supporting business and getting people back to work.
It is also expected one of Sydney’s most hated Covid-19 rules could be one of the first changes, getting workers back into the office before the end of the year.
Announced so far is a revamp of the NSW crisis cabinet — which has been responsible for the state’s handling of the pandemic — and will be renamed the COVID and Economic Recovery Committee in a bid to reflect the change of times.
As of next week, new case numbers will be released at 9am instead of 11am.
“I’ll make the decisions in relation to addressing my very good friends in the press at the time that I think is most appropriate,” Mr Perrottet said.
“I know what I will seek to do is provide the health numbers earlier in the morning from next week.”
Fully vaccinated teachers will also return to the classroom, while restrictions in places of worship and hospital visitations will also likely ease for the vaccinated.
Seven News’ Tom Hartley flagged a major change could see an overhaul of mask wearing rules that could see restrictions removed earlier than December.
As for the unvaccinated, those questions remain.
“I think there is an opportunity for some changes and I have had those discussions this morning, we have a crisis cabinet meeting this evening, in relation to how those will work going forward,” Mr Perrottet said before the meeting.
“There are a number of issues that need to be looked at.
“As we hit the key 70 per cent and 80 per cent vaccination targets in coming days, we need to ensure that our focus remains on keeping people safe and continuing to strive for above 90 per cent vaccination rates,” Mr Perrottet said.
From Monday, residents will be able to head to the pub and leave their local government areas.
Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello outlined the new restrictions in a Facebook post on Wednesday afternoon, which includes how numbers will be capped at pubs and restaurants, an increase on the number of guests in homes and the reopening of gyms.
He said the QR code check-in system will again be crucial to notify those who have visited an exposure site.
On Tuesday, Mr Perrottet assured residents lockdowns were a thing of the past.
“I don‘t want to go back into lockdown,” he said.
“Now, we’re committed to the national roadmap, and that is clearly set out in the Doherty report that, from time to time, there may be the need for targeted restrictions.
“But ultimately, we‘ve got to learn to live alongside this virus, and vaccination has been the key to doing it. “
NSW has reached a new milestone, with 70 per cent of the state’s eligible population (aged 16 and over) now fully vaccinated.
Sharing the news on Facebook, the premier declared it a “big step closer to a full reopening and a proper summer”.
