‘Gutted’: Australia reacts to Gladys bombshell - NEWS.com.au

Australians have reacted with shock to Gladys Berejiklian’s sudden resignation, with a number of items being left outside her home and office.

“Gutted” Aussies has reacted with shock to Gladys Berejiklian’s bombshell resignation, while Sydney residents have left flowers and cards outside her home and office.

Ms Berejiklian’s resignation has touched many Australians, some of whom confessed they were not usually interested in politics.

Among the wellwishers was celebrity personal trainer Michelle Bridges, who on Friday evening took to Instagram to express her frustration over Ms Berejiklian’s resignation.

“I’m honestly not a political person. I kinda listen now and again, but most of the time they just have me glazing over,” she said.

“I’m actually really gutted to see this lady go.

“I admire your tenacity, your guts, your spirit, your sheer belief and that you turned up everyday.”

Balloons, flowers and cards were left outside of Ms Berejiklian’s home, with one supporter describing her resignation as “heartbreaking”.

“It was absolutely heartbreaking watching you resign as our Premier. You have been the most amazing premier for our state and for that I wish to thank you,” their card read.

At the time of writing, the Facebook post on Ms Berejiklian page with her resignation statement had attracted more than 6000 comments.

“A true leader shines during turbulent times. Gladys shined through both the good and bad times. Sad to see you go,” John Claude Tadros wrote.

“I am extremely shocked and saddened by this. You have been a strong premier and always a woman willing to go the hard yards. I wish you well; you will be missed,” Maria Pteris said.

Mel Carstairs wrote: “You have worked harder in the last 18-24 months than any predecessor and fought such a courageous battle not only with the pandemic, but an environment full of men who so desperately want to cut you down.”

Passers-by outside of Ms Berejiklian’s office told Sky News of their annoyance at the perceived double standards of her resignation.

“Women always cop it,” one punter said.

“(It) makes me want to cry. She’s led us through a really difficult time, we’re in a global pandemic and she’s led us with strength and integrity and I‘m devastated that she’s gone,” another said.

Signs taped to her Northbridge office proclaim: “Long live Gladys,” “NSW swindled,” and “we love you Gladys”.

Once hailed as “the woman who saved Australia”, Ms Berejiklian on Friday said she had no choice but to step down from the job she loved owing to an ICAC investigation.

“I love my job and I love serving the community, but I have been given no option,” a visibly upset Ms Berejiklian said in a six minute statement.

“As the leader of the NSW government, I have expected the highest of standards of myself and my colleagues.”

“I have made it clear on numerous occasions that if any of my ministers were the subject of allegations being investigated by an integrity agency or law-enforcement, then he or she should stand aside during the course of the investigation until their name was cleared … that same standard must apply to me as Premier.”

It followed a statement from the NSW ICAC which confirmed it was investigating whether she breached public trust or engaged in corrupt conduct.

The investigation is related to allegations surrounding the disgraced former MP, and Ms Berejiklian’s ex-boyfriend, Daryl McGuire

At the heart of the probe is questions of what she knew and when.

Details of the relationship between Ms Berejiklian and Mr McGuire were first made public at an ICAC hearing a year ago.

The secret relationship between Ms Berejiklian and the former Wagga Wagga MP ended in August last year, the same month the premier was first drawn into the ICAC investigation.

Ms Berejiklian has represented the seat of Willoughby since 2003 and has been Premier since 2017.
