Beverly Malone had been listening to the radio in her house on Long Island, less than a month after she had her sixth child, when she heard a radio bulletin about John Lennon's murder.
“I wasn’t working because I had a baby at home. I always had the radio on all day,” Malone reminisced, adding she usually listened to classical music broadcasts or just kept it on as background noise. “I was never into contemporary music.”
She remembers caring for her son Brian at the time, and though she does not have vivid memories of the bulletin's contents, what stuck with her was the outcry of support for Lennon that followed his death.
“ ’Imagine’ was a big thing that came out of that,” she said, referring to the memorial in Strawberry Fields in New York City’s Central Park. Malone remembered learning about the many vigils and memorial services dedicated to Lennon’s life and legacy.
Malone’s husband, Jack, said with a chuckle, “I know John Lennon was shot, and I didn’t do it,”
He also recalled hearing the news during a radio bulletin and added he was never a huge fan of Lennon’s music but recognized his importance to music culture.
Both Malones expressed how awful it was to learn about Lennon's murder, but noted that they had been busy with their daily lives and didn’t spend too much time focused on it.
