Residents urged to prepare as storms expected to lash NSW over Christmas - 9News

Residents living in flood zones have been urged to "take care and prepare" ahead of Christmas, as severe storms are expected to lash New South Wales from Sunday.

Widespread severe weather is forecast to hit the north, east and southern parts of the state from tomorrow, with heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail and potential supercells all possible.

The State Emergency Service has warned that the severe storms could lead to flash flooding and property damage in parts of Illawarra, South Coast, Northern Rivers, Mid-North Coast and Metropolitan Sydney.

NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz said that volunteers will be ready to help in the case of an emergency. (SES)

"We're expecting 50 to 100 millimetres rainfall in parts of the state from Sunday, and we are concerned about the potential for flash flooding and storm damage," NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz said.

"The most important thing the community can do is to avoid travelling through flood waters. You don't know what debris or damage to the road could be below the surface.

"People can also prepare by trimming trees around your property, securing loose items in your yards, moving your cars under cover and cleaning your gutters will help minimise the impacts of strong winds and significant rain."

The wet weather is expected to stick around until Boxing Day, as an inland trough deepens, potentially bringing more rain.

Platz says SES volunteers will be ready to help their communities should an emergency storm strike.

"Our dedicated volunteers are ready to assist their communities during the forecast weather events, should people need help with storm damage or flooding," she said.

"We are continuing to monitor the conditions, and are prepared to preposition assets and personnel should it be required."

Residents have been urged to stay up to date with current weather warnings through the Bureau of Meteorology.
