'Tragic loss': Firefighter dies extinguishing blaze at luxury Sydney home - 9News

A firefighter who lost his life extinguishing a large house fire is being remembered as a "community-minded person" who worked tirelessly for his community.

Michael Kidd, 51, was among the first firefighting crews to respond to a blaze that engulfed a luxury seven-bedroom Airbnb in Grose Vale, 10km west of Richmond, just before 8am.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said Kidd was impacted by what appeared to be a falling beam.

"FRNSW and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighters both performed CPR until paramedics arrived and the man was pronounced dead at the scene," FRNSW said in a statement.

NSW Police and FRNSW are working to investigate the circumstances of Kidd's death.

Authorities are also providing support to Kidd's family, crew and others impacted by the tragedy.

"It is a tragic loss for FRNSW," Fewtrell said.

Fewtrell said members of FRNSW and the Rural Fire Service felt the loss very deeply.

"This is a firefighter making an amazing contribution to his local community keeping people in Hawkesbury safe," he added.

"It is something he has done for many years.

"He is a community-minded person who was also a member of the RFS as well as his role in FRNSW.

"That speaks volumes about the type of person we have lost today, someone who will be dearly remembered for years to come."

Fewtrell said there was no good time to lose a colleague, friend or loved one but that it was a particularly awful time of year.

"It is a particularly cruel twist two weeks out from Christmas to lose a cherished family member," he said.

NSW Police said the cause of the fire was unknown.

9News understands a Rural Fire Service volunteer was also taken to hospital after suffering a medical episode during the blaze.

At this stage, it is believed he is in a stable condition.

The Grose Vale property hosts seven bedrooms, which can accommodate more than 16 guests, and has a pool and tennis court.
