Police are investigating if a couple who led police on a dramatic high-speed car chase, which was live-streamed across Australia on Thursday morning, are connected to a string of home robberies in Sydney’s south-west, sources say, after a gun was found in the car.
A man and a woman led police on a 90-minute pursuit from Prestons in Sydney’s south-west, crossing into oncoming traffic and narrowly missing multiple cars before crashing into a traffic light metres from a school gate at North Rocks in Sydney’s north-west.
The chase was broadcast by Australia’s major news channels in real time, allowing viewers to follow as police cars tried to stop the white Hyundai Sonata sedan, which appeared to have prior damage to its bonnet.
After the car smashed into the traffic light at the intersection of Barclay and North Rocks roads in North Rocks about 11am, the man and woman were arrested and taken to Ryde police station.
The couple, who have not been identified or charged, were being sought by police over suspected break-and-enter robberies, a police source not authorised to speak publicly told the Herald.
Officers were seen searching the car shortly after it crashed, seizing items including sneakers, tracksuits, bags and a knife, placing it all in evidence bags.
Police pulled at least one firearm from the car, the source added, and there might be a second among other items taken as evidence.
Police footage from the scene shows a large black gun, wrapped in material and in a black backpack, in the boot of the crashed car.
A police officer removed the bag containing the gun and placed it on the kerbside.
The male driver was hauled to his feet by officers and led to a car, but officers stopped him at the last second and removed a chain from his neck and placed it in an evidence bag.
The woman was handcuffed and sat, by police, on an electrical box next to the school fence. A sign behind her read “SLOW DOWN, KIDS DON’T BOUNCE”.
Police said the pursuit began just after 9.30am after they detected an allegedly stolen car in Revesby in Sydney’s south-west.
Police tried to stop the car, but the driver failed to stop.
The PolAir helicopter and several police cars began pursuing the car, which began travelling north.
Police will address the media with an update on the arrests this afternoon.
