Bus smashes into two homes on Mornington Peninsula - The Age

Two people have been hospitalised after a bus with up to a dozen passengers onboard crashed through two homes on the Mornington Peninsula after being struck by a truck at a Safety Beach intersection.

Images from the scene show the public bus resting in a home on Dromana Parade after the crash with a concreter’s tray truck occurred about 11am on Wednesday.

The front end of the vehicle was buried in the property, while bricks, tiles and fencing could be seen scattered at the scene.

Victoria Police said the 44-year-old male bus driver and a 17-year-old boy onboard were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Up to a dozen passengers were on the bus and 10 were uninjured, while one was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.

Police said a bus, travelling north on Prescott Avenue, and a truck, travelling west along Marine Parade, collided at an intersection.

The bus then mounted the nature strip, crashed through a frontyard fence, clipped the corner of a house’s roof, ploughed through another fence, before it eventually crashed into a neighbouring property and caused “extensive structural damage”.

Both properties are holiday houses belonging to families living in Melbourne. Two couples, who own one of the properties, are holidaying in Paris and Bali, respectively.

Their parents, Ian and Merilyn Williams, said they were yet to reach the family in Europe. They said the family in Bali were in surprised to have their trip interrupted this morning.

“It’s just a big shock, I suppose,” Merilyn said.

Tim Green’s father built the neighbouring house in the 70s. Green had also driven from Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon to assess the damage on behalf of his mother, who lives in a retirement home in the city.

The front bedroom and living room of the family’s beach house sustained significant damage when the bus ploughed through the front yard.

Green said the house was likely to have also sustained water damage after being hosed down to mitigate the risk of asbestos. He said they had been prevented from entering the property to survey the damage and temporary fencing would be put up this afternoon to keep people out.

“It’s a big hole. It’s going to be a big repair bill,” he said.

The full damage to both properties was still being assessed on Wednesday afternoon. Emergency services were delayed in towing the bus due to asbestos concerns.

The mother of a teenage passenger told 3AW the bus was travelling towards Portsea when the truck emerged from a side road and T-boned it, sending the vehicle into two houses.

Sharon’s 17-year-old son was on board and taken to Frankston Hospital after his teeth were reportedly knocked out in the incident.

She was en route to hospital see her son and described a “pretty chaotic” scene on arrival. The CFA said two people were inside the truck. Both were uninjured.

Emergency services confirmed no one was inside the two homes when the bus hit.

Victoria Police said the 32-year-old truck driver was assisting police with their enquiries.

The CFA said no one was trapped, although Victoria SES said its Sorrento unit attended from 11.20am to help the CFA to extricate patients for paramedics to assess.

“VICSES Sorrento Unit volunteers remain on scene to assist with propping the structure for safe removal of the bus, by heavy haulage,” an SES spokesperson said.

The incident was declared under control by 11.49am, the CFA said. Police said they’d investigate the circumstances of the incident.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam/CCTV footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
