A nine-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car in Melbourne’s outer west on Wednesday night.
Victoria Police say emergency services were called to Shaws Road in Werribee after a child was struck by a car about 9.15pm.
Paramedics worked on the child, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Victoria Police media adviser Kathryn Muffett confirmed on 3AW on the child was a nine-year-old girl.
Detective Sergeant Peter Romanis, from Victoria Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit, said witnesses performed CPR on the girl before emergency services arrived.
“This is yet another tragic reminder of how important road safety is,” Romanis said on Wednesday night.
“We will continue to support the family throughout what is absolutely a devastating outcome for them. And I’m sure that the local community will rally around them and provide them with all the love and support that they need at this time.”

Romanis also thanked passers-by who turned into first responders.
“It’s a very confronting scene, particularly given the age of and vulnerability of the child,” Romanis said.
“It takes a tremendous amount of courage for those witnesses to stop and do what they did. Our thanks and our hearts go out to them – who no doubt will be suffering – as well.”
The female driver of the car stopped and is assisting police with their enquiries.
Ambulance Victoria said the woman in her 50s was taken to the Werribee Mercy Hospital for observation.
Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.
Fire Rescue Victoria also attended the scene and supported Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria.
