Three teens have been charged with murder over the alleged fatal stabbing of 14-year-old Ethan Hoac in Melbourne’s western suburbs last month.
Hoac and two friends were walking home from a railway station in St Albans late on June 26, when he was allegedly struck by an SUV before two men in face coverings got out and attacked him. He died before reaching hospital.
Detectives on Saturday night arrested an 18-year-old Tarneit man and two 17-year-old males – one from Deer Park and one from Wyndham Vale – over the incident.
The trio were charged with murder and faced a children’s court on Sunday.
Victoria Police prosecutor Seveni Perera told the court that between 300 and 400 hours of CCTV footage needed to be reviewed in the case.
The three accused were remanded in custody, and will return to court for a committal mention on November 2.
Police investigators executed search warrants on Saturday at properties in Wyndham Vale, Deer Park and Fitzroy in connection with the death.
Hoac, who loved gaming and basketball, was remembered late last month as the joker of his large group of friends.
The year 9 Braybrook College student was walking home with two friends, reportedly from a different school, on the night he died.
His friend, Jolie Nguyen, said Hoac’s violent death shocked his friends, who were hit “pretty hard” by the tragedy.
“Ethan was not the kid that would get into trouble. He was not that type of person,” she said.
“He was a kind-hearted, funny and goofy person. He was always so generous, paying for everyone’s food.”
