A Sydney criminal lawyer has been shot in what police believe was a targeted attack in the city's south-west.
Key points:
- Mahmoud Abbas was shot outside a home in Greenacre this morning
- Mahmoud "Brownie" Ahmad was shot and killed in the same street last year
- Mr Abbas has a number of high-profile clients including Salim Mehajer
Emergency services were called to Narelle Crescent, Greenacre about 10:30am on Wednesday morning after reports of shots fired.
They arrived to find 30-year-old solicitor, Mahmoud Abbas, with gunshot wounds.
Police believe he was outside the home when he was approached by an unknown person and shot.
Detective Superintendent Adam Johnson this afternoon said Mr Abbas was getting into his car and was about to leave when the incident took place.
The ABC understands Mr Abbas was able to run back into the home and call emergency services after being shot.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital in a serious condition after being found conscious at the scene.
'Targeted and brazen'
Detective Superintendent Johnson said that Mr Abbas would head into surgery.
“The person is known to us, not aversely I must say," he said of Mr Abbas.
Detective Superintendent Johnson said it was too early to speculate on motive, or whether there are any links to any other recent shootings.
He said there were "one if not more" offenders who are yet to be identified.
"This is clearly a targeted and brazen shooting," he said.
"The circumstances that we know at the moment are very concerning."
A crime scene has been established and investigations continue.
Officers from Bankstown police and the State Crime Command's Criminal Groups and Raptor Squads are probing the incident.
Mr Abbas is a partner with Abbas Jacobs Lawyers.
He has represented a number of high-profile clients including former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer, and ex-NRL player Jamil Hopoate in recent years.
Last year, underworld figure Mahmoud "Brownie" Ahmad was allegedly murdered on the same Greenacre street.
It is not suggested that Mr Abbas was linked to that incident or has any involvement in criminal activity.
This latest shooting comes after three people were shot Mayvic Street, Greenacre on Sunday morning.
