Free travel offered to Sydney train commuters to stop industrial action - 9News

The Premier of New South Wales has offered free public transport to Sydney train commuters next week in an effort to stop industrial action by the Rail Train and Bus Union (RTBU).

Only trains on the Sydney rail link network will be free for travellers, which means buses, light rail and some regional services will not be free.

Perrottet announced the five free days of trains an hour after the union said rail workers would stop operating foreign-built trains next Monday and Friday unless the government agreed to a fare-free travel, or signed the deed committing it to modifications to the new intercity fleet.

"I want this situation fixed – I've made that very clear," Perrottet said.

"This has gone on for way too long. Providing free travel for the week will ensure that industrial action does not occur."

The premier warned the union that a government commitment to modify the new intercity fleet would be abandoned if any further industrial action was taken on the NSW transport network.

"If there is any industrial action on the network, we are not modifying the (new intercity fleet)," he said.

"Following those constructive discussions that we had yesterday, I'm hoping that there's a resolution."

RTBU state secretary Alex Claassens said Monday and Friday would essentially run as a weekend timetable as rail workers would only use 30 per cent of the fleet, unless the union's terms were met.

"They either give us a deed that they sign, which is the deed that we are happy with, and they're not linking into anything else, or they give us a fare-free day," Claassens said.

Perrottet met with union bosses to discuss the ongoing dispute yesterday afternoon.

The union and state government are currently in a Federal Court battle over the rights to turn Opal card readers off.

The case has been pushed back until February 2023.
