Melbourne Cup 2022: Vandal dumps 1000 litres of ‘oily sludge’ on Melbourne Cup racecourse - 7NEWS

Climate activist group Extinction Rebellion Victoria has praised the pouring of 1000 litres of sludge across Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday morning by an unknown vandal, just hours before the running of the $8 million Melbourne Cup.

Racing Victoria was forced to make quick repairs to the racetrack after damage was discovered at the 1500m mark.

“RV Stewards have assessed the Flemington track following notification of some damage to the surface at the 1500m mark,” an RV statement read.

“Remedial work has been undertaken by VRC track staff.

“The track has been deemed safe for racing by RV Stewards with no impact on the conduct of today’s meeting.”

Extinction Rebellion shared footage of what appeared to be someone pouring “1000 litres of oily sludge” on to the track.

“This morning XR was contacted by friends who had dumped 1000 litres of sludge onto Flemington Racecourse ahead of today’s Melbourne Cup activities,” it said in a Tweet.

The group added they “fully endorse” the message of the individual who vandalised the track.

The man who claims to have carried out the incident identifies as a “problem gambler”, and said the act was a protest against the “toxic” racing industry.

“This is about Victoria Racing Club, and the toxic industry of which they are leaders, choosing to protect their racecourse against the impacts of climate change at the expense of people’s homes and livelihoods,” the man said in a statement.

Victoria Police told 7NEWS.com.au in a statement they had been called in over the matter.

“Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after unknown offenders have broken into a racing facility in Flemington and poured an unknown substance over a portion of the track about 6am today, 1 November,” it said in a statement.

“Any queries relating to the implications on events at the facility should be directed to the Victoria Racing Club.”

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
