Hundreds of festivalgoers in Melbourne had to sleep in their cars after heavy rain turned a festival into a quagmire of mud.

A Day on the Green was held at Mt Duneed Estate near Geelong, south-west of Melbourne, last night.

When the show finished, vehicles were stuck in the mud, leaving many of the 16,000 fans stranded.

Some revellers had to sleep in their cars.

One man even said he covered himself with grocery bags to try and stay warm in his vehicle.

Authorities said they were given the green light to go ahead with the event, and had advised people to use the park and ride.

They provided tractors to get people out today, and locals also volunteered to help.

Wild winds prompted more than 500 calls for help and seven flood rescues across the state.

Gusts of up to 100km/h will continue tomorrow, with more rain on the way.

Meanwhile, parts of Sydney climbed to 27 degrees today with wind gusts of hot westerlies up to 50km/h.

That prompted the Rural Fire Service (RFS) to implement a high fire danger warning, stretching from the Blue Mountains, to the Northern Beaches.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds also remains in place for the north and south coasts.

NSW SES has more than 100 flood warnings in place across the state.

On Saturday night, storms and flash flooding inundated and damaged homes in Wentworth in the state's far south west with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) receiving 255 calls for help.

The SES said two houses had their roofs blown off in the storm.
