Police launch e-scooter safety blitz as man dies in hospital after crash in Melbourne's north - ABC News

A 28-year-old man has died in hospital after crashing his e-scooter in Melbourne last month.

Police believe the man was not wearing a helmet when he lost control of the vehicle while travelling over a speed hump at Pascoe Vale, in the city's north.

The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash on the morning of Thursday, September 22.

He died in hospital on Friday, September 30.

Police are continuing to investigate the fatal crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Police to focus on education in e-scooter safety campaign

An e-scooter trial that began in February this year remains underway in the City of Melbourne, the City of Yarra and the City of Port Phillip. The regional city of Ballarat is also part of the trial.

Those using the scooters as part of the trial must wear a helmet, must have a blood-alcohol level below 0.05, cannot exceed 20 kilometres per hour and can only ride in bike lanes, shared paths and lower-speed roads.

Outside of the trial, the use of e-scooters is illegal in most public areas and they can only be used on private property.

In the wake of their rising popularity, police have launched a campaign to ensure riders are using the electric vehicles safely.

The police action is in response to multiple incidents, including September's fatal crash.

Victoria Police Acting Inspector Darren Kenos said the mix of high-powered e-scooters, pedestrians and other road users outside trial areas was leading to increased risk.

"This [risk] is only heightened if current road rules aren't being followed," he said.

"We are always looking to educate people when we engage with them, however given the seriousness of the collisions we are seeing we are not going to hesitate to issue fines for blatant disregard of the rules."
