Banks offer loan deferrals for flood-hit customers

By Clancy Yeates

Australian banks say they will allow flood-stricken mortgage customers to put their loan repayments on hold for up to three months, depending on individual circumstances, as part of emergency assistance packages.

The Australian Banking Association said on Thursday that customers affected by the flooding disasters in Queensland and NSW would have access to relief measures including repayment deferrals on home loans, personal loans, and the waiving of fees and charges.

The industry peak body said the relief measures would depend on the circumstances of customers. The ABA’s chief executive, former Queensland premier Anna Bligh, urged customers in financial stress to contact their bank.

“As people affected by these terrible floods start the long, slow recovery, this will give some financial peace of mind,” Ms Bligh said.

“Loan deferral or reduced repayment arrangements for home, personal and some business loans are being offered across individual banks”.

“Customers are encouraged to talk to their bank, as soon as they are able, and find out what assistance is available to get them through this tough time”.

As well as deferring loan repayments, the banks say other measures on the table include the waiting of some fees, debt consolidation, and emergency credit limit increases.

Erosion concerns amid five-metre swell

By Jenny Noyes

The threat to Sydney from the major east coast low isn’t just coming from rainfall and subsequent flooding. The swell will be three to five metres – relatively uncommon for swells from the east as opposed to the south.

That poses an erosion threat for the city’s east-facing beaches – including Collaroy, where a sea wall was controversially erected to protect homes but has left some locals concerned that large swells will destroy what’s left of the beach in front.

Earlier this morning, the Bureau of Meteorology said rain in Sydney today would be focused on the northern districts and northern beaches.

A hazardous surf warning remains in place for the Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast today and tomorrow.

“Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas,” the bureau said in its advice.

Public asked to be aware of falling trees

State Emergency Service Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns says the east coast low starting to travel down from off the coast of Newcastle is likely to bring extreme weather to Sydney this morning.

Speaking to 2GB this morning, Mr Kearns said the SES was preparing for significant flooding.

“Effectively, what we are saying is the floods are going to be higher than they were in 2021,” he said.

He asked members of the public to be careful as strong winds and damp ground increased the risk of trees falling.

“With the strong winds, avoid parking near trees because the ground is going to be really wet,” he warned.

“We are asking members of the public to be careful because if the trees come down they could bring power lines down, too.”

Where are Sydney’s evacuation centres?

Parts of Mulgrave and Holsworthy have been added to the list of evacuation orders in place in Sydney this morning. Residents in parts of these suburbs have been asked to leave their homes by 9am.

With evacuation orders in place across a number of north-west and south-west Sydney suburbs, the State Emergency Service has established evacuation centres in the Sydney metropolitan area. Here is where to go if you’ve been asked to leave your home:

  • Blacktown Leisure Centre, Blacktown
  • Cabra-Vale Diggers, Canley Vale
  • Castle Hill RSL, Castle Hill
  • Club Menai, Menai
  • Penrith RSL, Penrith

And you’ve heard it 100 times but it bears repeating: never drive through flood water.

Major flood warnings for Hawkesbury, Nepean and Georges rivers

In the past few hours, the Bureau of Meteorology has updated its flood warnings for three Sydney rivers. Here is the latest:

  • There is now a major flood warning for Milperra, in south-west Sydney, with the Georges River forecast to reach 4.2m by 10am. A moderate warning is in place for Liverpool Bridge. Minor flooding is already occurring at Milperra and Liverpool.
  • Flood warnings for the Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers have been upgraded to major risk level. By 6am, major flooding had already occurred at Menangle, higher than in March 2021, and North Richmond.
  • Forecasters say it is possible levels at North Richmond and Windsor could also exceed the March 2021 event today before heading downstream over the next two days. The Hawkesbury River may reach 15m by midday at North Richmond and is likely to exceed 12m at Windsor this afternoon, with levels of 14m possible by evening.

Evacuation order are currently in place for several suburbs in these areas. Check the SES website for the latest.

Latest from the bureau: today’s rain to focus on city’s north

Bradley Wood from the Bureau of Meteorology has just given the Herald an update on the weather expected to be seen in Sydney today.

The highest rainfall has so far been seen in the western suburbs, with Badgerys Creek recording 143mm of rain between 9am Wednesday and 5am Thursday, and falls of over 120mm at Penrith and Richmond and of more than 110mm at Bankstown and Camden.

But today, the heaviest falls are forecast for the city’s northern districts: both in the north-west, where residents are preparing for floods, and on the northern beaches, where coastal erosion is a concern.

“At the moment, the east coast low is sitting off the NSW coast, just off Taree,” Mr Wood said.

“We are expecting more rainfall during the day. We are expecting it to redevelop in the northern part of the metro area and lower Hunter regions; potentially through Windsor, northern suburbs and northern beaches.”

More than 250 schools shut due to bad weather

More than 250 schools across NSW have been shut due to the flooding and resulting road closures across the state.

That figure includes 187 state schools, 28 Catholic schools and 34 independent schools.

Check the list for state and independent schools here and Catholic schools here.

‘Absolutely exhausted’: Windsor prepares for third flood in two years

At Windsor, in Sydney’s north-west, Ben Sullivan knows the drill: it is his third flood in two years.

“I am absolutely exhausted,” he told the Herald around 5am, after moving his belongings to higher ground since 7am on Wednesday. He has just walked upstairs to catch a few hours of sleep before continuing to pack and heading out.

“I’ve just seen the water trickle into our dining room,” he said.

“I’ve still got a very large pile of books to move. But because we are in a three-storey house, the ground floor is going under so we’ve got two metres more before it hits.”

Later this morning, he will turn the power off and leave.

“We will be staying local, just so you can come back easily.”
