A total of 64 new coronavirus cases in Victoria

The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald can confirm that Victoria will announce 64 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday.

That number is down from Monday's 75 cases.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said on Monday that he was worried numbers would go up this week as results from the door-to-door suburban testing blitz in hotspot suburbs come through.

The Victorian government was meeting this morning to discuss local lockdowns. The government is expected to reveal more on that possibility, along with more details on the 64 cases, this afternoon.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke with Premier Daniel Andrews at length on Monday about the Victorian outbreak, and federal authorities are pushing for suburb-by-suburb action.

No new coronavirus cases confirmed in Queensland

Queensland has recorded another day without a new COVID-19 case, as Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk prepares to reveal a decision on stage three of restriction easing. (You can watch her press conference, which has just got started, in the post below).

Just two of the state’s 1067 cases remain active, with only one in hospital, updated Queensland Health data shows.

Authorities carried out a total of 4512 tests statewide on Monday, with almost 365,000 now conducted since the pandemic began.

Childcare centre in Melbourne's north becomes the fourth to close this week

A fourth childcare centre in Melbourne has closed due to a positive coronavirus case.

It has been confirmed that a staff member at Maples Early Learning Centre in Mernda, north of the city, has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a letter to families on Sunday, the childcare centre said Maples would be closed from Monday to Wednesday, and would re-open Thursday in line with state Health Department guidelines.

As reported earlier in the day, Gowrie Clare Court Early Learning Centre has also closed after a child tested positive.

Yesterday, The Age reported that Guardian Childcare and Education centres in Abbotsford and Pascoe Vale also closed after positive cases.

More than a dozen Melbourne schools have also closed for deep cleaning following positive coronavirus tests. You can see the full list in the 11.42am post, which automatically updates as any new locations are confirmed.

Where to get tested for coronavirus in Victoria or New South Wales

The maps below show the location of coronavirus testing sites in Victoria and New South Wales.

Today, Victoria's Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said on social media that new testing sites had opened at the following locations:

  • Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), 30 Aughtie Drive, Albert Park.
  • Roxburgh Park Youth and Recreation Centre - 75 Lakeside Drive, Roxburgh Park.
  • Winchelsea: 17 Willis Street, Winchelsea (by appointment)
  • Nathalia: 36-44 McDonell Street, Nathalia (by appointment)
  • Mildura Central: Deakin Avenue, Mildura, Target rear carpark

In addition, she said Chadstone’s coronavirus drive through testing centre had moved to Golfers Drive, off Waverley Road.

The Victorian map should update automatically whenever a new testing site is opened, but there may be a slight delay before new locations appear.

What is it like to contract COVID-19?

In April, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald's Europe correspondent Bevan Shields tested positive for COVID-19 in London and wrote a first-person account of his experience with the illness.

Also in April, science reporter Liam Mannix interviewed mathematician Tony Guttmann, who appeared to have caught the virus from a visiting academic.

Pharmacy worker in Melbourne's north tests positive for COVID-19

A pharmacy worker in Melbourne’s north has tested positive to COVID-19.

A staff member at Quality Pharmacy at Pacific Epping shopping centre tested positive on Saturday although was at work the previous Monday and Tuesday.

In a letter sent to shopping centre traders on Monday, seen by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, centre management said the pharmacy would close until further notice and increase cleaning at the plaza.

More antibacterial products would be positioned around the shopping centre and air conditioning will be adjusted to increase fresh air, according to the letter.

A deep clean of the pharmacy and contact tracing is underway.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers, retailers, staff, contractors and suppliers at Pacific Epping is always our overriding priority and we take this notification extremely seriously,” the letter reads.

Aged care facilities in Melbourne close to visitors over COVID-19 fears

A total of 19 residential aged care homes in Melbourne have been temporarily closed to visitors for two weeks as a precaution, amid a surge in COVID-19 cases across the city.

Estia Health, which operates dozens of aged care facilities across the country, closed their Melbourne-based facilities to outsiders from midnight on Monday for two weeks.

Visitors will be able to see residents in exceptional circumstances on compassionate grounds, according to an Estia spokeswoman.

“We have apologised to our residents and their families for this short-term inconvenience however the safety, health and wellbeing of the vulnerable residents in our care is always our priority,” she said.

“We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely and will look to re-open our Melbourne homes to visitors as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The temporary closures do not affect Estia homes outside of Melbourne.

AFL fixture to be redrawn after SA border decision

The AFL will redraw the fixture for rounds six and seven after the South Australian government decided to keep its border closed to Victoria (see 10.40am post).

The SA government's call has further narrowed the league's options and ensured that Victorian teams will be playing on the road in those weeks and beyond.

While games had been scheduled in Melbourne between St Kilda and Port Adelaide and North Melbourne and Adelaide (both in round seven), the AFL confirmed that it would reorganise the fixture for round six and seven in response to the SA decision.
