Federal government to send in help to control Melbourne coronavirus outbreaks

Federal health authorities are working with the Victorian government to potentially "ring fence" the outbreaks, through a lockdown of local government areas.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke at length on Monday about the Victorian outbreak as the pair agreed on the deployment of 800 federal workers to help under siege state authorities bring the situation under control.

The federal government believes, on the advice of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, that suburb-by-suburb action needs to take place.

The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald understand the Victorian government is meeting to discuss the possibility of local lockdowns this morning and will hold a press conference this afternoon.

The Morrison government has agreed to provide 100 managers to support community engagement, 500 staff to form public engagement and door-knocking teams, and 200 clinical staff to undertake testing at fixed sites, to release clinical staff to participate in mobile testing in hotspots.

Mr Morrison on Monday pledged to give Mr Andrews anything he needs to combat the outbreak, which threatens to put a handbrake on the easing of border restrictions and slow the nation’s economic recovery.

Summary of school and childcare centre closures in Victoria

There have been a slew of school and childcare centre closures in Victoria this week due to children or staff members testing positive for coronavirus.

Earlier today we were doing a separate post on each school, but due to the numbers I am going to instead keep updating this post with more school closures as more information comes to hand.

The Melbourne schools that have closed for cleaning this week due to positive coronavirus tests are listed and mapped below:

It is school holidays in Victoria at the moment so classes are not in session.

And the Melbourne childcare centres that have closed are:

Berejiklian encourages Queensland to open borders ahead despite Victoria concerns

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has again encouraged Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to open her state's borders ahead of an expected announcement today.

There were no local cases recorded in NSW overnight, with five recorded in returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

"I'm very concerned about what's happening in Victoria... but having said that, NSW has kept its borders open during the entire time and we've managed to get to this place through vigilance and the hard work of the community," Ms Berejiklian said.

The Premier said "ironically" her state has had people from Queensland and Western Australia bring the virus in during the pandemic, as well as the bulk of overseas arrivals, and NSW has "dealt with it".

"That's why I say to all the other states: we've welcomed all the overseas travellers that live in other states, we've even welcome people who've come across your own borders to NSW who had the disease and we've managed that. There is a path forward."

When will Victoria's latest numbers be announced?

There hasn't been a daily coronavirus update out of Victoria this morning, and as far as I know an alert hasn't been sent out yet on when it will be held.

Yesterday there were 75 new cases confirmed in Victoria - the fourth-highest daily total since the start of the outbreak - and the state's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton flagged yesterday that the numbers would get worse before they got better.

When a time is confirmed for the update I will put in a post in the blog.

Berejiklian happy to welcome AFL players as NSW records no local cases

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has thanked sports codes for cooperating with her government's directions to not sell tickets to Victorians, repeating her call for people in her state to not welcome Melburnians into their homes this school holidays.

Ms Berejiklian said she was happy for AFL and NRL players from Victoria to play games in NSW due to the level of safety protocol adopted by their organisations, but it was a different story when people were travelling for holidays.

"If you're a loved one, a friend or a family member, please don't come up at this time, until the community transmission is under control," she asked Melburnians.

Announcing that her state's five new cases overnight were all in hotel quarantine, the Premier said she had noticed people in NSW "starting to relax a little bit too much for [her] liking".

"Just because we haven't had the community transmission that's occurred elsewhere doesn't mean it can't happen," she warned, ahead of further eased restrictions in the state tomorrow.

"And the way that we stop it from happening is by maintaining the social distancing the hand hygiene and sticking to the rules."

Hume Central Secondary College, in Melbourne's north, closes after two students from same family test positive for COVID-19

Two students from the same family at Hume Central Secondary College, in Broadmeadows in Melbourne's north, have tested positive for COVID-19.

In a letter sent to parents this morning from College Principal Jeff Mulcahy, seen by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, the two siblings attend the Town Park senior campus at the college.

The school will close today for at least three days.

At least a dozen schools in Melbourne have been closed for cleaning this week following positive coronavirus tests.

The school is located in the Hume municipality, one of Melbourne's community transmission hotspots for coronavirus, which currently has 54 known active cases (which equates to more than one in six active cases in Victoria), more than any other local government area in Melbourne.

The area has been the target of a testing blitz in recent days, so the elevated numbers may also point to increased testing.

Jockeys pulled from Gosford race meeting, asked to undergo COVID-19 testing

A number of jockeys have been told not to attend the Gosford races on Tuesday and to immediately undergo COVID-19 testing after a rider who attended the Rosehill meeting on Saturday was found to be displaying flu-like symptoms.

Racing NSW is taking every precaution and contacted several jockeys with mounts on the Central Coast, telling them to stay away from the provincial meeting.

South Australia scraps plans to lift border restrictions

South Australia has scrapped a plan to lift all its remaining border restrictions next month amid the spike in coronavirus cases in Victoria.

Premier Steven Marshall said the July 20 date to lift quarantine measures for Victoria, NSW and the ACT had been abandoned on the latest health advice.

He said the state may move separately on NSW and the ACT but can't make any move in relation to Victoria in the current circumstances.

"Our number one priority is the health, welfare and safety of all South Australians. At this stage we cannot lift that border (with Victoria) on the 20th July as we were hoping to do," the Premier told reporters on Tuesday.

Two staff members Camberwell Grammar in Melbourne's east test positive

Two staff members have tested positive for coronavirus at Camberwell Grammar School in Canterbury in Melbourne's east.

The private school confirmed that parents were notified on Monday about the two cases, who were asymptomatic at the time of testing.

"Two members of staff returned positive results to COVID-19 following voluntary on-campus tests undertaken last Thursday, in which some 130 staff participated," a letter to parents from the school's Deputy Head Rob French reads.

The two staff cases come after a Year 7 student at the school tested positive over a week ago.

"Neither staff member is linked to the young man who tested positive last week," said Mr French in the letter.

The Health Department has asked the school to cancel all sporting events and close gym facilities over the school holiday period, and a deep clean will undertaken during the contact tracing period.

"This virus respects no boundaries," Mr French said.
