Floodwater recedes after Victorian town turned into an island - 9News

Two council workers have been rescued after rising flood waters turned a town into an island in Victoria's Gippsland region.

There are seven watch and act warnings in place across the region following days of heavy rainfall but river levels have begun receding, after threatening to isolate coastal communities.

Mallacoota's main road was cut off for hours but then reopened again in the afternoon.

There were more than 100 calls for help by residents due to flooded roads, property damage, fallen trees and stranded cars.

Farmers were forced to move livestock to higher ground.

"The ocean is absolutely roaring out with the seawater meeting the freshwater," a Mallacoota resident told 9News.

Earlier east Gippsland Shire Mayor Tom Crook told 3AW the main road into the township of Bemm River would likely close if the waterway peaked.

The Cann, Genoa and Bemm River catchments recorded rainfall totals of 50-120mm in the past 24 hours.

Meteorologist Angus Hines told Today that although the worst of the wild weather had passed, it wasn't over yet.

"We still anticipate further rain to (fall on) the soggy, saturated areas in the next couple of days," he said.

"The intensity has come down but there is more incoming showery weather today and through the weekend for eastern Victoria and east NSW, two of those areas which have been hit hardest by rain and flooding over the last few days."

Roads were also cut off and a school and businesses were also forced to close after flash flooding hit Victoria's north earlier this week.

Swan Hill recorded its wettest day in 25 years, recording 85.4mm in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday.
