NRL star Payne Haas’ mother recovering as tributes flow for three victims of fatal Bonogin crash - 7NEWS

A Queensland woman who lost her sister, mother and stepfather in a crash involving NRL star Payne Haas’ mother says the incident “shouldn’t have happened”.

Stephanie Zimmer, 35, her mother Susan Zimmer, 70, and stepdad Chris Fawcett, 79, died when their silver Mercedes hatch and a black Mercedes wagon crashed at Bonogin in the Gold Coast hinterland around 5pm on Friday.

The black car was being driven by 46-year-old Uiatu “Joan” Taufua, who is the mother of Brisbane Broncos and NSW State of Origin player Haas.

Claudine Snow, the sister of Stephanie and daughter of Susan Zimmer, told 7NEWS at the scene of the crash that she “will never get over this”.

“My mother, my stepdad, my only sibling - my sister - have been taken from me,” she said.

“This shouldn’t have happened.

“I want people to know, when you get behind the wheel, you have people’s lives in your hands.

“It’s destroyed my life. I don’t know if I can ever be happy again.”

Police have suggested the black car, of which Taufua was the only occupant, was driving erratically in the lead up to the crash.

A kilometre from the crash site, police had tried but failed to flag down the black car.

Officers opted not to pursue the car because of the alleged “conduct of the driver” and “it was too great a risk”, Gold Coast District Officer Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said on Saturday.

Police had still not interviewed Taufua by Sunday morning due to her not being well enough, after she also suffered serious injuries in the crash.

“Police have been checking with the hospital with regard to that,” said Acting Chief Superintendent Christopher Stream.

“The female driver of the vehicle sustained significant injuries as well, including bone fractures.

“Police don’t have medical clearance to interview that female driver. But as soon as we can, that driver will be interviewed.”

Meanwhile, flowers continue to be left at the scene, where Snow also paid tribute to her family members.

“My mum was my best friend,” she said.

“My sister, she was so beautiful. She had an intellectual disability, but she could light up the room. She could make anyone laugh.

“She was a beautiful, beautiful young woman.

“Chris was a doctor. He saved so many lives.”

Stephanie and Susan Zimmer, and Fawcett, died at the scene.

The police internal watchdog - the Ethical Standards Command - is also looking into the incident.

Witnesses and anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of the crash or moments leading up to it are being urged to come forward.

The Brisbane Broncos declined to comment.
