Shadow Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has revealed her teenage daughter has contracted COVID-19 and has accused the government of letting down Australian children.
Key points:
- Senator Gallagher's family remains in strict quarantine
- The rest of the family has tested negative for COVID-19
- The ACT is in lockdown and as of Tuesday night has 45 active cases
Senator Gallagher said she was informed that her 14-year-old daughter Evie was among 17 positive cases reported earlier on Tuesday.
"She's pretty unwell," the senior Labor frontbencher told the ABC.
"I mean we've all lived through childhood viruses and things, but I'd say this is at the more severe end.
The former Chief Minister of the ACT turned senator urged people to get vaccinated.
"If we had more people vaccinated, our children wouldn't be as vulnerable as they are today," she said.
"For anyone out there thinking about vaccination, please go ahead and do it because it is really not something you want to see to see your child be as sick as I'm watching my little girl tonight."
In social media posts on Tuesday evening, Senator Gallagher said she has returned a negative test result, along with her son and partner.

"Our household remains in strict quarantine until ACT Health advises us that we don't need to isolate anymore," she said on Facebook.
"I am lucky as I am fully vaccinated."
Senator Gallagher chairs the Senate's COVID-19 Committee, which has been interrogating the federal government's response to the pandemic and has been highly critical of Australia's slow vaccination program and use of hotels for quarantining returning overseas travellers.
"My focus right now is on my little girl and getting her through this — but these events bring a sharp personal focus to the consequences of our government's failure to ensure a prompt, efficient national rollout of vaccines," she said.
Senator Gallagher was inside Parliament House on Thursday of last week before Canberra entered its first week of lockdown.
There are 45 active cases in the ACT and dozens of exposure sites.
Earlier on Tuesday Prime Minister Scott Morrison said no decision had been made on whether Federal Parliament would resume for its scheduled fortnight of sittings next Monday.
"A quorum of members of Parliament actually remain here in Canberra," he said.
"They've been here during the lockdown. So there won't be an issue in terms of there being enough members to be able to sit in the Parliament next week if that's indeed what we progress with."
The territory's Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, has previously said it is his preference that Parliament does not go ahead.
