Prime Minister Scott Morrison has flagged an announcement about COVID-19 vaccinations for Australia’s 1.2 million 12- to 15-year-olds after national cabinet’s meeting on Friday.
Australia’s medical regulator deemed the Pfizer vaccine safe for use in 12 to 15-year-olds in late July, and the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation approved its use in 220,000 vulnerable children in that age group from August 9. ATAGI is expected to approve its use in the rest of that cohort ahead of the meeting.
Mr Morrison told question time on Wednesday 12- to 15-year-olds would be able to get vaccinated in “the weeks and months ahead” once they had been given the green light to join the rollout.
Mr Morrison pointed out on Thursday 1.8 million doses of vaccine had been delivered to eligible Australians over the past week so it should be possible to get that adolescent cohort done fairly quickly.
“[It] is a task that is certainly well within the capability of the vaccination program,” he said.
