Dan Andrews has taken a swipe at leaders north of the Murray with a not-so-subtle dig.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison will no longer give Sydney “preferential treatment” in vaccine allocations, according to Daniel Andrews.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews gave a brief summary of Friday’s national cabinet meeting on Sunday, explaining how he called on the prime minister for a “proper proportional distribution” of doses.
“You can’t ignore the fact NSW has received significant additional support – we don’t begrudge them for that,” Mr Andrews told reporters on Sunday morning.
“But we are now under a set of rules here in Victoria, with case numbers too high to be able to safely open up … that means we have a number of challenges as well.”
“It is only fair that we distribute vaccines based on the population and need … but we can’t continue to see hundreds of thousands of extra doses pouring into Sydney at the expense of every other part of our nation.
“There has to be a limit to that and I’m very pleased that the Prime Minister has confirmed that that won’t be the case.”
It followed Mr Andrews’ comments that Victoria’s sixth lockdown won’t end as scheduled on September 2 following 92 new locally acquired infections on Sunday.
“It was about not having a situation where there continues to be preferential treatment as if what Victorians are living through isn‘t real – of course it is,” he said.
“I think the best thing to do is as these additional stocks arrive, send them out in using the fairest method.”
The Premier also took a subtle swipe at NSW after they allowed weddings to proceed with limited numbers in attendance, despite daily case numbers consistently cracking 1000.
NSW has also floated the prospect of people being able to go on picnics again if vaccine milestones are achieved.
“I’m pretty keen that we get our fair share (of vaccine doses) now and I’m sure other state premiers would have a similar view that they’ve (NSW) had extra support,” Mr Andrews said.
“Now it’s time to not necessarily have them ahead because the national plan is about all of us moving together.
“Not a national plan for picnics, just quietly, the notion of giving up vaccines so Victorians could go and have picnics … no that’s not what we are doing.”
Victoria recorded 92 new locally acquired infections – just 63 cases could be linked to existing outbreaks, while 29 remained under investigation.
Premier Daniel Andrews said too many cases had been out in the community while they were sick, and had sparked health officials to extend the lockdown beyond September 2.
