September is right around the corner, and today’s schedule offers a surfeit of games that could have major playoff ramifications.
The AL Wild Card race appears to be a five-team competition for two spots, and all five are in action on Thursday, including the Yankees and A’s, who begin a crucial four-game series in Oakland. Also on tap: the Blue Jays against the White Sox, the Red Sox against the Twins and the Mariners against the Royals.
In the NL, the Padres will host the Dodgers in the third game of the first series between the NL West rivals since June. The Dodgers' scheduled starter? San Diego has scuffled in the second half and is now in danger of missing the playoffs, although the Friars are still neck-and-neck with the Reds in the race for the second NL Wild Card spot. Speaking of the Reds, they’ll play the NL Central-leading Brewers for the final time this season.
Meanwhile, in New York, the Mets are set to finish off their series against the Giants, the first MLB team to 80 wins this season. It’s been a tough month for the Mets, who were in first place in the NL East by 4 games at the end of July but are now in third with a lot of ground to make up.
