Greenwich Town Party goes 'the extra mile' with strict COVID protocols for attendees - Greenwich Time

GREENWICH — Before a single note is played at the Greenwich Town Park, everyone from the ticket holders to Don Henley will be required to follow a set of health and safety protocols for COVID-19 before entering Roger Sherman Baldwin Park for the all-day music festival.

“It will be an incredible day to bring our community together again in the safest way possible,” Greenwich Town Party co-president Ray Rivers said of Sunday’s concert, headlined by The Eagles and the Zac Brown Band.

The pandemic forced organizers to cancel the event for 2021 and move this year’s concert from its traditional spot on the calendar from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.

As the GTP celebrates its 10th year of hosting a full day of musical acts, it is taking some extra precautions: Everyone must provide either proof of vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the event to gain entry.

“At the GTP 2021, our top priority is the health and safety of all of our attendees. To that end, we are following the best practices within the industry that have been implemented at special events and music festivals throughout the country this year,” organizers said Monday. “We have been working on our plans and have been refining them for months.”

Ticket holders should visit www.greenwichtownparty.org for more information on filling out health screening forms. The restrictions cover everyone: concertgoers, volunteers, vendors, media and the performers, a group that includes the members of The Eagles and the Zac Brown Band.

There are separate forms on the website for each category. The vaccination cards or negative tests must be uploaded by 72 hours before the Greenwich Town Party, which begins Sunday morning and lasts into the night.

Due to the timing, organizers said anyone who plans to submit test results should schedule a COVID test now to get an appointment. Results will be accepted only from tests taken after 10 a.m. Sept. 2. Greenwich Hospital continues to provide COVID tests.

They have seen an “excellent response,” with nearly 3,000 attendees uploading their vaccination cards so far, organizers said Monday.

The system is operated by CrowdPass, which offers a help desk if there are any questions.

At the GTP, masks will be “welcome but not required,” organizers said. Masks will be available for free on site, and everyone entering the park will also receive a 2-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer. Handwashing and sanitizer stations will be set up throughout Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, and staff will clean and sanitize the stations throughout the day.

First Selectman Fred Camillo offered high praise for the safety protocols set up by the nonprofit Greenwich Town Party Inc.

“They’ve really gone the extra mile on this. which is great,” Camillo said.

Greenwich has high COVID vaccination rates: Last week, the number of fully vaccinated residents, among the 52,000 who are eligible, was up to 77.62 percent and those who have gotten at least one shot is more than 84 percent, he said. Camillo also reinstituted a mask mandate for all buildings in town with rising COVID cases across the state and the nation.

“We want people to have as much normalcy in their lives as possible,” he said. “We want people to be careful until we get to the other side. ... In other parts of the country, something like (the Greenwich Town Party) would be very problematic. But the fact that we have high numbers of people vaccinated and our numbers are good compared to other places, it means we can have these events.”

Stamford is bringing back concerts as well with its Alive@Five and Wednesday Nite Live series returning this week. Like with the Greenwich Town Party, ticket holders for the Stamford concerts must present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of the events.

At the Foo Fighters concert at the new amphitheater in Bridgeport next month, ticket holders will also be required to provide either proof of vaccination or a negative test within 48 hours of the show.

The Greenwich Town Party will be headlined by The Eagles, members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; country music superstars the Zac Brown Band; the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which is making its third appearance at the party; and Caroline Jones, a rising country star and former town resident who attended Greenwich Country Day School.

The headlining acts will be joined by local bands throughout the day, with Brunswick Music Improv, Robert Genna Sings, That’s What She Sang, Roctopus, Paloma Skye, Happy Accidents, Rang-A-Boom and Charlie King & the Next Big Thing slated to perform.

On Monday, Rivers said organizers are eager to get the party going on Sunday, after last year’s cancellation and this year’s delay.

“Words cannot express how thrilled we are to be coming together to celebrate our community once again,” he said. “We look forward to being back together with all of our friends and neighbors, rocking out to the music we love, and celebrating our wonderful town.”
