A car running a red light on Sydney’s north shore set off a chain of events and revealed a possible plot to kill a member of the city’s underworld.
Police are investigating whether Ibrahem Hamze was the intended target of two armed men who were spotted in a stolen car near his north shore home two weeks ago.
The driver of the stolen Mercedes refused to stop for officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol about 9.45am on Saturday, August 14, sparking a pursuit.
The car ran a red light and the chase was called off due to safety reasons. The vehicle was later found abandoned, with a flat tyre, on Miller Street in Cammeray.
Two men wearing dark clothing were seen dumping the silver car, before stealing a Toyota Camry from a 76-year-old man at gunpoint. The man wasn’t injured.
The State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad is delving more deeply into the pursuit and carjacking, investigating whether there was a more sinister plot involving Hamze.
The suspects are yet to be caught but are understood to have left crucial evidence behind.
Hamze is the younger brother of slain gangster Bilal Hamze, who was shot after leaving the Kid Kyoto Japanese restaurant on Bridge Street in the CBD in June.
He is also the subject of Serious Crime Prevention Orders, put in place to stem the deadly violence between his family and the rival Alameddine clan.
The 26-year-old is suspected of being involved in a brawl in which a member of a rival gang was injured at Sefton, in the city’s west, last October, triggering a spate of tit-for-tat shootings.
The crime prevention order limits with whom Mr Hamze can associate and to where he can travel in Sydney.
He fought to have the restrictions relaxed so he could attend his sibling’s funeral but, for safety reasons, his presence was kept secret until the ceremony had finished.
Last month, Ibrahem Hamze pleaded guilty to breaching four Serious Crime Prevention Orders and was placed on a two-year community corrections order, against which he is appealing.
