South Australian authorities have imposed fresh border restrictions in response to a cluster of four coronavirus cases detected in Melbourne yesterday.
Key points:
- Anyone who has been at an exposure site in the relevant time is now banned from entering SA
- Anyone who arrived prior to the restrictions coming into effect late yesterday will have to quarantine for 14 days
- Victorian health authorities are urgently trying to locate the source of the cluster
SA Police said people who have been to any one of several designated exposure sites at relevant times during the past week are now unable to enter the state.
"The majority of these people should already be in 14 days' quarantine in Victoria and are not permitted to leave quarantine to travel to South Australia," SA Police said.
Police imposed the restrictions last night and said exemptions would apply to people who are escaping domestic violence, but not to essential travellers or people relocating to SA.
Anyone who had already arrived before the restrictions came into effect last night will have to isolate for 14 days and get a COVID-19 test on days one, five and 13.
Victorian contact tracers are urgently trying to determine how the cluster of four new cases emerged in Melbourne's north.
It is believed the outbreak is linked to the Wollert man who became ill in early May after contracting COVID-19 in hotel quarantine, in Adelaide.
The Victorian government has so far listed Tier 1 and Tier 2 exposure sites in the Melbourne suburbs of Brunswick, Epping, Bundoora, Maribyrnong and Reservoir.
Three of the cases are close family contacts of the initial case, whose source of infection remains unknown.
Two of the cases live in Whittlesea in Melbourne's outer north, and SA Police have also imposed less strenuous restrictions on anyone who has been in the City of Whittlesea council area since May 6.
The area includes the suburbs of Beveridge, Donnybrook, Doreen, Eden Park, Epping, Humevale, Kinglake West, Lalor, Mernda, Mill Park, South Morang, Thomaston, Whittlesea, Wollert, Woodstock and Yan Yean.
People who have been to those suburbs are still allowed to enter SA, but will have to have a COVID-19 test within 24 hours of their arrival and again on days 5 and 13.
"The person must not enter a high-risk setting for 14 days after their arrival in South Australia."
