Annastacia Palaszczuk BOASTED about shutting the Queensland border with shameful post - Daily Mail

The shameful post that shows Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk BOASTED about shutting the border and ruining Christmas for millions - and why it proves she's a worse leader than Gladys Berejiklian

  • Annastacia Palaszczuk announced border checkpoints with NSW on Monday
  • Immediately afterwards her spin doctors pumped propaganda on social media
  • Health minister also advertised the 'hard border' in a Twitter post on Monday
  • NSW leader Gladys Berejiklian urged compassion and measured response

When Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the return of border checkpoints on Monday her spin doctors pumped her social media pages with propaganda hailing the decision as a huge win for Queenslanders.

A video of the premier announcing the change was posted on her Facebook and Twitter pages with the title 'Queensland reinstates hard border closure with Greater Sydney'.

At the same time, new Health Minister Yvette D'Ath tweeted an image of the words 'Queensland's hard border to NSW is back to protect Queenslanders' imposed on a bright red background to catch as much attention as possible.

The spin betrayed the Labor government's keenness to show off its ruthless border stance which helped it win another four years of power in October.

There was not a hint of a genuine apology for the thousands of tourism businesses who had bookings cancelled, the families who were split apart, or the hardworking Aussies whose Christmas holiday plans were shattered after such a difficult year.

To make matters worse, in her haste to show off her toughness, Ms Palaszczuk actually caused mass confusion by failing to clearly explain the policy change.

Several media outlets and journalists, confused by her repeatedly boasting of a 'hard closure on the Queensland-New South Wales border' incorrectly reported that the premier was shutting off the whole of NSW.

In fact, the only change was to check everyone's border pass to make sure they had not been in Greater Sydney, which was blacklisted the previous day when only 30 new coronavirus cases were recorded, all linked to a cluster on the Northern Beaches which has been largely contained.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian urged other premiers to 'think about the heartbreak and please think about the facts' before deciding to slam borders shut - but her plea fell on deaf ears.

She also called for other states to increase their hotel quarantine caps as NSW continues to selflessly take in half of returning Aussies, regardless of which state they are from.

On Wednesday Ms Palaszczuk reacted furiously to this idea, falsely accusing Ms Berejiklian of blaming Queensland for the outbreak.

'If there hadn't been the cluster outbreak in the northern beaches, well no one would have had to take these measures and everybody would have been seeing their family and friends over this Christmas and new year period,' Ms Palaszczuk said as she mercilessly blamed the NSW government.

'I think it's a bit rich for New South Wales to start blaming Queensland and Victoria and whichever other state and territory she wants to blame,' she added.

'This has happened in NSW, it has happened in the Northern Beaches, and we wish them all the very best, but we do not want our lifestyle compromised.'

Her remarks indicated a stark contrast between Australia's two female premiers.

One uses parochialism to score political points while the other is a compassionate, rational and measured leader who has handled the pandemic better than all the rest.
