SA has recorded two new cases linked to the Parafield cluster bringing the total number of cases to 33.

The two new cases are a child linked to the family at the centre of the cluster and a man in his thirties - a “casual contact” of a previous case.

The man - whose result was received in the early hours of Saturday morning - attended the English Language Institute - the second case linked to the school.

SA’s Chief Public Health Officer, Prof Nicola Spurrier, said both cases were already in quarantine and there was no risk to the public.

Prof Spurrier said currently there were no new locations to be added to SA Health’s contact tracing page

The child previous tested negative but subsequently returned a positive result.

The total number of cases in the cluster is 33 with 19 active cases in the state.

A woman, the only case in hospital, has been discharged.

About 5800 close contacts, or contacts of close contacts, have been identified to date in the wake of the cluster.

The total number of cases in SA since the pandemic began sits at 561.

A total 3830 COVID tests were carried out in SA yesterday - a total Prof Spurrier said was ‘a little disappointing”.

“I want to see that go higher”.

Asked if she thought the lower testing number reflected complacency in the community, Prof Spurrier said; “I think it was the weather - it was so hot, most people stayed inside which was a sensible thing to do. Let’s see what the numbers are today.”

She urged anyone with even mild symtpoms to get tested and said the Parafield cluster remained “a really significant concern for me and also for most of South Australians I am sure”.

She also said authorities were “really pushing” South Australians to wear a mask when going out in public.

Asked if the latest cases might threaten SA’s plans to re-open its border to Victoria on December one, Prof Spurrier said no.

However, she said the latest cases only served to highlight that the virus was highly contagious and that people didn’t need to be “hanging out” with others for long periods of time to contract it.

Health Minister Stephen Wade announced that remote Aboriginal communities in SA’s APY Lands would be re-opened “effective immediately”.

Current permit requirements would still apply.
