Police are searching Adelaide's CBD for prisoner Jason Burdon, who escaped from the Adelaide Remand Centre this morning.
Key points:
- Police described Jason Burdon as being "low risk" to the public
- It is believed he climbed down using a rope made of clothing
- Officers have been using CCTV footage to track the escapee
They said the 33-year-old fled from the kitchen area of the maximum security facility on Currie Street about 9:55am, with police informed about 10:20am.
It is believed he escaped by using items of clothing as a rope.
Clothes can be seen hanging from the outside of the centre, with louvres bent apart.
Burdon is described as being about 165 centimetres tall, with a medium build and light brown hair.
"He was last seen wearing a navy blue T-shirt, navy blue shorts with dark coloured socks and work boots," police said in a statement.
Superintendent Craig Wall said Burdon was believed to be of "low risk" to the public.
He said Burdon escaped into Phillip Street, just north of Currie Street, stole an electric bicycle and made his way towards Port Road.
Superintendent Wall said he was in custody for a breach of bail and "some firearms offences at the lower end".
"We don't believe he is of high risk, but because he is an escapee, we would like to apprehend him as soon as possible."
He said police had reviewed CCTV showing Burdon escaping into Philip Street and heading towards Port Road, "and that was the last sighting we've had of him".
"We're asking the community, if you see him, to not approach him, but if see him or know of his whereabouts, contact police on 131 444 or triple zero."
He asked Burdon to call the police to be taken back into custody.
The remand centre is privately managed and operated by Serco and accommodates male remand and sentenced prisoners.
There have been a handful of attempts to escape custody in SA over the past several years.
An inmate at Yatala Labour Prison reportedly smashed his way into the ceiling space of the prison in an attempted escape in September this year.
Low-security prisoner Shane Gauci used a toilet break at an On The Run service station to flee police in September 2018.
Another Yatala inmate, Jake Devenney-Gill, jumped the fence of a low-security area of the prison in early 2016.
