‘Quarantine immediately’: Dozens of Australian students are plunged into isolation after an infected man visited a busy university campus for two WEEKS – sparking fears of another outbreak

  • Alert for anyone at a English language centre at Flinders University Sturt campus
  • Infected case visited Intensive English Language Institute November 13 and 28
  • Anyone who attended the centre in that two week period must self-isolate
  • The Adelaide university campus will remain closed for cleaning until Wednesday

Health authorities have ordered students and staff at an Adelaide university to isolate after an infected patient visited the campus over a two week period.

Anyone who attended the Intensive English Language Institute at the Flinders University Sturt Campus any time between November 13 and 28 must immediately get tested and quarantine for 14 days.

'This includes people who live with you,' the South Australia health alert states.

It comes after a man aged in his 30s who attended the centre during that period returned a positive result on Saturday.

Those affected must be tested on day one and 12 of their self-isolation and must remain in quarantine for the entire 14 days, regardless if they return a negative result.

The university's Sturt campus will remain closed until Wednesday for deep cleaning.

'At this stage no Flinders staff or student has been identified as a close contact and there are no confirmed cases among Flinders University staff or students,' the university wrote.

'Out of an abundance of caution, effective immediately, all buildings on the Sturt Campus are closed until 8am on December  2 as we undertake further deep cleaning.'

'Students are asked to only come to one of our South Australian campuses if they have a scheduled class activity or exam, or need to access one of our services in person.'

The university is expected to provide a further update on Sunday.

The latest warning have sparked fears of another outbreak in Adelaide as the Parafield cluster which sparked a three day statewide lockdown earlier this month continues to grow.

The infected man was one of two new cases recorded in South Australia on Saturday.

The second case was a child from the original family at the centre of the Parafield cluster, where the number of cases now stands at 33.

The state's chief health officer Professor Nicola Spurrier says the man's infection validates the decision to order students at the Intensive English Language Institute to self-isolate.

'The information I'm giving you today shows how contagious this virus is,' she told reporters on Saturday.

'This person was considered a casual contact rather than a close contact and again it absolutely backs up the information we were already giving to people.

'We're seeing people that have got infected through fairly brief contacts.'

The South Australian government will implement a two-week, step-down strategy in easing measures imposed at the start of the outbreak.

That will include opening the borders to Victorians from December 1 and scrapping limits on pub, restaurant and cafe patrons.

But a general work from home advisory remains along with a one person per four square metres rule for all indoor venues.

Victoria recorded its 30th consecutive day or zero new cases or deaths on Sunday.
