Sydney news: Sydney records hottest two days for 60 years, shooting death in Western Sydney - ABC News

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Hottest two days for 60 years

Sydney Observatory has recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for two days in a row for only the second time on record.

The weekend heatwave across New South Wales eased on Sunday night, following a late southerly change.

Senior forecaster Rosemary Barr from the NSW Bureau of Meteorology said the last time Sydney Observatory recorded temperatures above 40C for two consecutive days was in 1960.

Ms Barr said preliminary data showed a number of weather stations had record minimum temperatures over the weekend, including Camden in Sydney's south-west.

NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Greg Allen said 54 fires bushfires were burning across NSW this morning, after 60 blazes were burning at the peak of the heat yesterday.

He said one bushfire in Sydney's north-west at Northmead severely damaged one house.

Milder conditions are expected across the state today, however, a total fire ban is in place in the north-west and Northern Slopes fire region today.

A 30-year-old man has died after being shot at his home in Sydney's west overnight.

Officers from Mt Druitt Police were called to a granny flat in Tregear at 2:30am.

There were reports two men had forced their way into the flat on Rymill Street and attacked the resident.

Police found a 30-year-old man had gunshot wounds to his leg and shoulder.

NSW Ambulance paramedics began treating the man but he died at the scene.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.

Child bitten in dog attack

A five-year-old boy is expected to undergo surgery after being attacked by a dog at Lake Macquarie in the Hunter region.

Police said the boy was bitten on the side of the neck yesterday at his family home.

He was flown to the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

Police said the two-year-old dog, described by police as a Rottweiler-type breed, would be destroyed.

Suburb's road nightmare

If you hate peak hour, spare a thought for the residents of Marsden Park in north-west Sydney.

The rapidly expanding suburb currently only has one entry and exit, via a single set of traffic lights at Richmond Road.

Some residents have told the ABC about waiting for 30 minutes to reach the lights, and then having to go on the rest of their journey.

"It can take half an hour to get out of this road to the main road," one resident told the ABC, while sitting in traffic.

Food charity overwhelmed

A food charity at Lake Macquarie says so many people are asking for Christmas food hampers this year, it has had to start turning people away.

Manager of Southlake's Incorporated Christine Mastello said they were experiencing unprecedented demand from people who had lost their jobs, were under financial stress or suffering from domestic violence.

She said they last week had to cap demand for Christmas food hampers at 600, double any previous year.

"We've never done more than 300 food hampers, so it's literally doubled," she said.

"People aren't coping financially and they're also not coping mentally. We're having so many horrible stories inundate us every day."
