"I hope that the last moments of your life don't look like this because this is what you'll see at the end of your life if we don't start wearing masks," warns Dr Kenneth Remy of Washington University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, in a video circulating on social media.
Dr Remy, who said he has treated over 1,000 COVID-19 patients since the pandemic began, said he made the video after a long, tiring day treating COVID-19 patients.
"Friday evening (November 20) we just had another death and I had to call another spouse of a patient of ours, and to be really frank, this had come on the heels of me getting ready to intubate another patient who asked me to let his loved one know that he loved her and his family because he didn't think he was going to survive," he said.
"And, and also coming on the heels of meeting a number of different people who said, 'I wish I didn't go this party unmasked with a lot of people.' And so, after this person died and I called their loved one, I felt defeated," he said.
"And so I I just grabbed a laryngoscope and a tracheal tube. I wanted to at least simulate what it would be like if you were to get intubated."
Remy said with over 400 COVID-19 patients currently being treated, the hospital is close to capacity and staffing shortages threaten to affect the hospital's ability to continue admitting patients at the same rate.
He said he sympathises with people who are tired of following social distancing and want to have a traditional holiday season, but urges them to hold out and be willing to celebrate Thanksgiving in April or June.
"I know that mask fatigue and distancing fatigue is certainly setting in in our communities. And everyone is just struggling to find some normalcy. But it's not right now. Our numbers have increased to devastating levels potentially for capacity at a lot of hospitals."
