Every week AEW brings fans two shows filled to their respective brims with pro wrestling goodness. The first one is AEW Dark, which pops up on YouTube with incredibly different run times each week. Then, Wednesday evening is two hours of AEW Dynamite, the flagship of the company. This week was all about John Silver.
AEW Dark: November 24th Episode
Calling this week’s episode of Dark weird does not do it justice. The run time was well over two hours, which is not a complaint. In fact, there were a total of 17 matches this week. Raw is three hours long and has half that many matches on a good week.
The beauty of Dark is that it moves at such a brisk pace that it doesn’t feel that long at all. It also shows the flexibility of the format as AEW can post as long or as short an episode as the company feels like. It all depends on how many matches they have to show. That means there’s more time for John Silver.
But none of that was what was weird. Things were going along fine until two guys dressed as pandas called The Panda X-Press took on Jurassic Express. This match was an absolute trip. Taz and Excalibur didn’t know what to make of the whole thing. It was the strangest match of the night, keeping in mind Trent also took on an oiled up Michael Nakazawa.
The Good
Much like last week, there were a lot of great women’s matches on Dark. Big Swole, Penelope Ford, KiLynn King, Red Velvet, and Diamante and Ivelisse all picked up solid victories. Britt Baker’s absurdly brilliant interview segment also returned. It actually seems like AEW is finally taking their women’s division seriously, and it’s about time.
Brandon Cutler picked up yet another victory, and seems to be putting a real win streak together. The big story is that his former partner, now known as “Pretty” Peter Avalon, picked up his first win. He now has a record of 1-27-2. Go team?
The Acclaimed also continued to grow. If you haven’t gotten on board with these two yet, it’s time. Their gimmick is solid and the talent is real. There’s been a lot of talk about Top Flight, and rightfully so, but fans should keep their eyes on this duo.
John Silver’s rocket ride to the top took picked up speed with a tag team victory alongside Alex Reynolds. The guy is nothing but upside, and is going to be huge. At this moment, Silver is just looking for that breakout moment to take him to the next level.
The Bad
Joey Janela and Sonny Kiss picked up another loss, confirming their status as a jobber tag team. Any push they were getting is done, which is disappointing. AEW either needs to do something with them or break the duo up and move on.
Sammy Guevara faced off against Marko Stunt. At this point, even the announcers are questioning how Stunt fits into the Jurassic Express gimmick. Sammy was great but he wrestled circles around Marko. He’s a good guy but watching Marko get beat up every time he’s in the ring is painful and repetitive.
“The Murderhawk Monster” Lance Archer delivered another fiery promo alongside Jake “The Snake” Roberts. There’s no denying that Lance is great on the mic but fans want to see him wrestle. It’s time for him to get back in the ring and get to work.
The Ugly
Again, The Gunn Club picked up a win, this time with Colten getting the pinfall. That means Colten has two wins under his belt. Alternatively, fellow Nightmare Family member Lee Johnson teamed with Aaron Solow to pick up another loss.
Seeing someone the caliber Lee Johnson take loss after loss while a newcomer like Colten Gunn has two wins is almost unfathomable at this point. Something needs to change in this equation quickly, mainly letting Johnson pick up a win or two.
AEW Dynamite: November 25th Episode
Dynamite was a mixed bag this week. While it was mostly good, there were some segments that were absolute duds. The issue certainly wasn’t in the matches as there was wall-to-wall solid action. Other parts of the show just didn’t line up.
Eddie Kingston jumped on commentary for the main event and was a beast as always. Listening to him and Tony Schiavone riffing off each other was incredible. When it comes to working the mic, no one is better than Eddie Kingston.
The Good
John “Meat Man” Silver put on a clinic of a match with “Hangman” Adam Page. Not only did Page look great but Silver had possibly his best singles match in AEW. Plus, Dark Order’s attempts to recruit Page ramped back up. It’s a good storyline. That being said, John Silver needs to start winning some singles matches for this to stick.
The newly renamed Powerhouse Hobbs picked up an easy win over Lee Johnson. It’s great to see the newest member of Team Taz get the victory but having Johnson job out to him was unnecessary. There were other wresters who could have filled that role.
As always, Taz gave the business a lesson in promos after the match, going after AEW management. Cody interrupted him and got choked out. The build in the Nightmare Family versus Team Taz feud is legit and engaging.
Anna Jay, with John Silver at ringside, and Hikaru Shida had a great match. Abadon returned after the 1-2-3 to lay claim to the title with a bloody lick. It’s another example of AEW actually putting some effort into the storytelling in their women’s division.
They doubled down on this in a promo featuring Vickie Guerrero and Nyla Rose. While they didn’t confirm their partnership with Jade, they did applaud her attack on Brandi. They also called out the three wrestlers who helped her. To paraphrase the old classic, there’s something happening here but what it is ain’t exactly clear.
The main event of the night was a barn burner featuring The Butcher and The Blade facing off against Rey Fenix and Pac. Eddie Kingston’s family might be coming apart but it’s great to see Death Triangle as a united front. They will dominate AEW. How Lance Archer fits into the equation remains to be seen, though hopefully it leads to an actual match for him.
The Bad
Keeping in mind that this was part of the build to TH2 versus The Young Bucks, Top Flight picked up their second consecutive loss on Dynamite. This is just the beginning of their time in AEW but fans are going to need to see Top Flight win if they’re going to get behind them.
For the first time in their respective careers, Christopher Daniels and Chris Jericho faced each other in the ring. This was actually really cool moment. But it was part of a tag match that featured Jericho teaming with Jake Hager.
The problem with this is that the Inner Circle already has a tag team, Santana and Ortiz. They never seem to wrestle, which is insane considering they’re one of the best teams in the world. AEW seems to have forgotten about this duo, which needs to change immediately. They should be in the title picture, no background players.
For the second week in a row, there was a contract signing segment between Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega that went awry. There wasn’t anything specifically wrong with it, just that it’s the kind of time wasting predictability one would expect from WWE, not AEW.
The Ugly
The feud that no one cares about between Best Friends and Kip Sabian and Miro took another pointless step. This week, it was in the form of a terrible backstage segment and a weak brawl.
AEW needs to cut their losses and end this feud asap because it’s wasting all of the talent involved in it. Miro should be dominating in the ring, not futzing around with weird videogame segments that Orange Cassidy interrupts.
Lee Johnson’s membership in the Nightmare Family continues to make no sense. No one accompanied him to the ring for his match with Powerhouse Hobbs and no one checked on him after the match.
Yet, The Gunn Club, who is always at ringside, checked on Cody after his whupping moments later. Add to that the fact that Lee Johnson tagged with Aaron Solow on Dark instead of a member of the Nightmare Family.
So far, the only evidence that he’s part of the family is his keen windbreaker and the fact the announcers keep mentioning it. He’d be better off joining Team Taz at this point. He might actually get some back up.
