Question Time: Scott Morrison thanks Trump administration - NEWS.com.au

Scott Morrison has thanked the Trump administration for its work over the past four years.

The Prime Minister spoke about the US election result during question time on Monday.

Mr Morrison commended Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and secretaries Mike Pompeo, Steven Mnuchin and Mark Esper for their commitment to the US-Australia relationship.

“We have worked in partnership to strengthen our alliance and to advance shared interests in our region and all around the world,” he said.

“We have forged new areas of co-operation in space and critical minerals, frontier technologies and more.

“This work will go on and a new chapter will begin on 20 January 2021.”

Mr Morrison has written to President-elect Joe Biden and invited him to Australia for the 70th anniversary of the ANZUS treaty.

He told the parliament that he had every confidence the relationship would go from “strength to strength” under Mr Biden’s leadership.

Anthony Albanese joined in congratulating Mr Biden and Ms Harris.

“It is indeed a historic victory, one based upon a platform of decency, honesty and progressive leadership,” he said.

“I‘m sure we all took great heart from the President-elect’s vow to be a be a president who seeks not to divide but unify.”

The Labor leader also encouraged the parliament to call out the “dangerous circus of conspiracy theories”.

“They should be called out for the nonsense that they are,” Mr Albanese said.

“We need top stand up for democratic values here and abroad.”

The first question time of the sitting week was a rowdy one with the opposition grilling the Morrison government over issues including climate change action, childcare costs and bushfire recovery.

“Why is the Prime Minister leaving Australia behind by refusing to support net zero (emissions) by 2050?” Mr Albanese asked.

“More than 70 countries have committed to net zero emissions by 2050, including Japan, Korea, France, Germany, Canada, the UK, and New Zealand, and now the United States under President-elect Joe Biden will support net zero by 2050 or perhaps even better.”

But Mr Morrison said his government was committed to reducing emissions consistent with its agreements.

“When it comes to the matter of net zero by 2050, Australia would like to meet that as quickly as possible, as quickly as it is able,” Mr Morrison said.

“That is why the Energy Minister (Angus Taylor) … has set out the technology road map which is the way that that can be achieved.

“We have our 2030 target that we have signed up to under the Paris accords, but I note the Labor Party has not.”
