Health authorities remain cautious as Victoria records tenth virus-free day - NEWS.com.au

Despite Victoria’s tenth straight day with no new COVID-19 infections health authorities are remaining cautious, warning traces of the virus are likely “still out there” in the community.

There remains two mystery cases – previously identified over the past 14 days – in Deer Park and in Heidelberg West.

Department of Health and Human Services testing commander Jeroen Weimar said the virus had not been defeated and implored people to continuing coming forward for testing.

“After 10 days of zero cases we remain very vigilant. I still have the view that there are still likely to be some traces of coronavirus out there in our community somewhere,” he told reporters on Monday morning.

“That’s why there’s this really consistent and very diverse testing program which is such an important part of what we’re doing.”

Mr Weimar said health authorities would continue to search samples from sewage sites across the state, as well as continue to establish pop-up testing sites throughout Melbourne.

“The significant testing volumes are very encouraging and why people like schools and employers getting on board is a big help,” he said.

Mr Weimar said every local government area across Victoria was testing at least 1.5 per cent of its population over a two-week period.

He said 24 per cent of those were children and young people under the age of 19, and a third aged between 20-39.

“We will see more interstate visitors coming back into Victoria, and in the future we’ll see people coming back in again from overseas,” Mr Weimar said.

“We have a number of challenges to overcome so a significant testing program is an important bulwark against protecting Victorians from this virus.”
