Today's cases largely from known outbreaks says CHO
By Rachael Dexter
Today's 14 new cases in Victoria are largely driven by known outbreaks, according to Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton.
Significantly, the Box Hill Hospital outbreak has jumped by six people since yesterday and is now at 10 people in total.
Five of the six new Box Hill cases are all in one family, he said.
"There are five cases from a family being added today, so the outbreak comprises three staff, one patient and now six household contacts."
Professor Sutton said all cases were isolated, and all close contacts of the staff members are also quarantined.
"This is how you stop a cluster from expanding. All staff on the COVID ward have been asked to seek testing and isolate pending those results and non- close contact staff can return once they obtain negative results," he said.
"They are still looking into the potential source of that outbreak but all potential avenues are being explored."
The number of cases linked to the Kilmore cluster has now climbed to six, one more than yesterday.
"I am sure in a week or two time, we will talk about Kilmore having no new cases and in a couple of weeks' time, hopefully no active cases whatsoever," said Professor Sutton.
There are no new cases linked to the Chadstone outbreak today.

Andrews says restrictions will ease on October 19 but only small steps
By Rachael Dexter
Premier Andrews has confirmed there will be restrictions easing come October 19, but has said definitively today that the steps will be small.
Melbourne was scheduled to see many restrictions ease, including the five-kilometre rule and limits on retail, hairdressing and outdoor dining.
"The tale of this second wave was always going to be stubborn, and that is exactly the way it is panning out," Mr Andrews said.
"I think it is unlikely that we will be able to move as fast as we would like to have done next Sunday."
Mr Andrews said the confirmation shouldn't cause despair to Melburnians.
"It is in no way warranted for people to be despondent or for people to lose any sense of hope, this strategy is working, but you have got to do it properly," he said.
"We can't have a situation where because we wanted to be over, we pretend that it is."
He said "an enormous amount of time" would be spent this weekend and throughout the week determining exactly what those next steps can be.
Eight of today's 14 cases under investigation says Andrews
By Rachael Dexter
As of today there are now 192 active cases in Victoria, down from 195 yesterday, according to Premier Daniel Andrews who has just started 100th daily press conference in a row.
As reported earlier there have been 14 new cases of COVID-19 in Victoria in the past 24 hours, and no new deaths.
Six of the 14 new cases today have already been linked to known outbreaks, eight are still under investigation.
One of today’s new cases is in Kilmore, bringing the cluster in the regional town to five.
724 people in Kilmore have been tested so far.
One case in Mildura earlier this week has been found to be a false positive.
As reported earlier in the blog there is one new mystery case today.
There are now 10 mystery cases over the past two weeks, all in metropolitan Victoria.
The total number of active cases now includes 42 linked with aged care outbreaks (down from 45 yesterday), and 19 healthcare workers (no change since yesterday).
There are 21 Victorians fighting the virus in hospital, including one person who remains in intensive care.
Yesterday 16,647 tests were processed.
NSW reports two locally acquired COVID-19 cases
By Kate Aubusson
NSW Health reported two locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Friday.
Another case acquired overseas and announced yesterday is also counted in today’s COVID figures.
One case reported in August has been deemed a false-positive and excluded from the state’s case tally, bringing the total number of cases in NSW to 4084.
One new mystery case confirmed in Victoria since yesterday
By Craig Butt
There has been one new mystery coronavirus case confirmed in Victoria since yesterday, state health department figures show.
The additional case brings the total number of cases with an unknown infection source recorded in Victoria since October 3 to five.
Under the state government’s roadmap for reopening, for restrictions to ease in Melbourne on October 19 there must be five or fewer mystery cases recorded in the two weeks from October 3 to October 16.
That means Melbourne is now on the precipice when it comes to the mystery cases limit and, on a strict reading of the reopening targets, one more untraceable infection over the coming days would push back the city’s reopening date.
But Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has flagged that Melbourne could potentially move to step three if more than five mystery cases were recorded in the lead-up to October 19 provided those cases were recorded early in the 14-day reference period.
I should mention the health department has not officially stated there was one new mystery case, but based on today's numbers I am confident enough to call it that there was a new one.
For transparency, here is my reasoning for why there is a new mystery case. (you can stop reading here if Saturday morning is not the ideal time for numbers talk)The total number of mystery cases went from 12 on 23/9 to 6/10 to 10 on 24/9 to 7/10, a net decrease of two:
Now that we have moved one day further up the line, September 23 has dropped out of the reference window, and on that day there were three mystery cases confirmed.
If there were no new mystery cases confirmed in the past 24 hours, that would have brought to the total for 24/9-7/10 down to nine.
There is a net difference of one because of one new mystery case from the past few days being added to the total.
In addition, the only COVID-19 cases for which the source is still being investigated are people who tested positive from October 3 onwards, so I am confident the new mystery case falls within the reference period.
Queensland Health plea for ill people in Townsville to get COVID-19 test
By Lucy Stone
Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young has issued a plea for all Townsville residents who are feeling even slightly unwell to go and get tested after she was notified of a positive COVID-19 sewerage test overnight.
She said Queensland Health had no record of any positive cases in the region so the positive result was worrying.
"When people are sick they have been coming forward and getting tested so we can find the first case in a cluster, and that is so critical," she said, adding tracers needed to find the first case of a potential cluster as quickly as possible.
"... Which is why I ask every person who lives in Townsville to please, if you are unwell today, if you have any symptoms, please come forward and get tested."
Dr Young said she had also been notified of a positive sewerage test in the Ipswich suburb of Goodna, which during the last Queensland outbreak a month ago was identified as a higher risk suburb.
"There may be something we don't know about, so please if you live in Goodna and you have got any symptoms, come forward and get tested," Dr Young said.

Queensland reports one new COVID-19 case
By Lucy Stone
Queensland has had one new case of COVID-19 recorded today, a man in his 20s who was international arrival in hotel quarantine tested on day 10.
Deputy premier Steven Miles said there remained four active cases in the state, three in hospital.
But he said there was worrying news from Townsville, where traces of the virus had been picked up in wastewater testing.
"We are trying to work out if there is a case or cases in or around Townsville that we are unaware of, that we have picked up in wastewater testing," he said.
