The 30-year-old Sheffield Shield partnership record set by Steve and Mark Waugh has been broken, with Victorians Will Pucovski and Marcus Harris setting a new mark of 486 on Sunday.
The Waugh twins' 464-run fifth-wicket partnership posted for NSW against Western Australia at the WACA Ground in December 1990 had been the record for any partnership in the almost 130-year-old history of the Shield. But Victorian openers Pucovski and Harris surpassed that total on Sunday morning on day three of their side's match against South Australia at Glenelg.
The stand finally ended when Harris fell for 239, caught behind off the bowling of Wes Agar.
Pucovski started the day on 199, bringing up his second first-class double century.
Harris had resumed unbeaten on 207, notching his double century in the shadows of stumps on Saturday.
He is looking to regain his Test spot after being dropped following last year's Ashes tour while the prodigious Pucovski – who made his highest first-class score by passing 243 on Sunday – has declared himself available for Test selection this summer after removing himself from calculations last year because of mental health reasons. He has generally batted at No.3 but was elevated to open ahead of Nic Maddinson for the Vics' Shield opener this year. Incumbent Test opener Joe Burns fell for a duck on Sunday morning playing for Queensland against NSW, which will doubtless lead to renewed speculation about the security of his spot in the Australian XI.
While this is the Redbacks' third Shield clash this season, it is Victoria's first, the squad having had to quarantine upon arriving in SA, but Pucovski has made up for lost time.
The Redbacks had been bowled out for 200 on day one.
