Alakiir Deng avoids jail for role in high-speed crash that killed Bor Mabil, sister of Socceroo Awer Mabil - NEWS.com.au

A woman who drove in a high-speed street race that killed the sister of Socceroos star Awer Mabil has avoided jail time.

Alakiir Kelei Deng, 20, was involved in a race with another driver, Akol Akol, when he crashed and killed Bor Mabil at Andrews Farm, north of the Adelaide CBD, on the night of January 26, 2019.

Sentencing her in the District Court on Thursday, Judge Michael Boylan said Deng, Akol and Ms Mabil had been at a house party on the night of the crash.

He said it was not clear how much alcohol Deng had drunk that night, but her blood alcohol reading could have been as high as .06 at the time she left the party.

Deng, who was carrying three passengers in her Toyota, sped off down the road, while Akol, carrying four passengers, followed at high speed.

“He drove up behind you, flashing his lights,” Judge Boylan said.

“You could have pulled over to let him pass but you accelerated, and the race began.”

During the course of the race, Akol drove on the wrong side of the road, and at one stage, he had to pull in behind Deng to avoid a crash with another car.

Both cars were driving about 100km/h when Akol’s car struck a kerb, rolled and slipped along the road, crashing into a tree and a Stobie pole.

“Ms Mabil, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was killed in the collision,” the judge said.

Deng, who pleaded guilty to aggravated causing death by dangerous driving, was a learner driver and did not have a supervisor in the car at the time.

Akol, whose blood alcohol was probably about .22 at the time of the crash, has already pleaded guilty and been sentenced.

He was also under the influence of ecstasy and driving disqualified.

Judge Boylan said Deng’s role in the crash was not as serious as her co-accused.

He sentenced her to three years, two months, with a non-parole period of two years, six months.

However, the sentence was wholly suspended on a three-year good behaviour bond.

Deng’s licence was also disqualified for 10 years.
