Sydney school to close after staff member tests positive for COVID-19 - Sydney Morning Herald

A primary school in Sydney's south will close for 10 days after a staff member who "had contact with most students" tested positive for COVID-19.

Laguna Street Public School in Caringbah will stop on-site learning until June 24, the NSW Department of Education has announced.

"The staff member has had contact with most students at the school during the period they may have been infectious," the department said in a statement on Saturday.

NSW Health will contact all families of children enrolled at the school over the next three days and give them details of self-isolation requirements.

"While we recognise this will be disruptive and inconvenient for many families it is important that we follow NSW Health advice and take all necessary precautions to minimise the risk of further transmission to support the vulnerable members of our community," according to the statement.

Parents will receive more information on learning from home on Monday and teachers will provide lessons remotely from Tuesday.

Students and staff will return to school on June 25.

Government school students in NSW returned for on-site learning on May 25 after nearly two months of remote learning.

However, a number of public and private schools have since temporarily closed after members of the school community tested positive for COVID-19, including Rose Bay Public School, Moriah College, Waverley College, St Ignatius College, Riverview and Warragamba Public School.

There have been 3119 confirmed COVID-19 cases in NSW and 50 deaths.

The state has begun easing COVID-19 restrictions, with up to 20 guests now allowed in homes and groups of the same size allowed outdoors.
